Hiya,
For a winter climbing trip in Scotland, the decathlon gloves are a looking a fair bit cheaper than other brands.
Are they any good? As I can get 2 pairs for the price on a single "brand name" pair.

In reply to fire_munki: I found them really difficult to get your fingers in when cold and wet. I found them a bit of a false economy.

In reply to birbeck: Agreed, had two pairs of the thin ones with suede pads. a couple of mixed routes and the fingers were burst open.

For general winter/ alpin / ski tour I find their full leather insulated gloves at £15 awesome, bit clumsy for hard climbing. But brilliant at that price. Not sure about thier fabric gloves for climbing in as I have never used them. As a budget mounaineering / low grade climb I'd by two and swop when wet. Rather than one pair of branded gloves.

Theres a lot of chat about wet hands on these gloves threads, I don't find I normally get wet hands wearing good branded gloves. I always buy gauntlets with pull string closure on the cuffs as I have found other gloves will let in the wet/snow.

In reply to CurlyStevo:

If you do get wet hands, the other way to deal with it is to use some thin liner gloves that never come off. That stops your skin sticking to the glove linings, no matter how wet they get.

Wont be too hard grade 3 I think pos a grade 4 if I get on with snow and ice.
Thinking a pair or two of leathers and some dachstein mittens.

You don't really have to worry too much at those sort of grades about having very dextrous gloves for leading. Most gloves will be fine and I'd suggest a single pair of warm waterproof gloves for leading and belaying would be fine (with some backup gloves in your bag). Harder mixed you need more dextrous thinner gloves for climbing, but then obviously something warmer for belays.

BD, ME, Berghaus, Marmott, Rab and Seal Skins all been wet in winter climbs for me! I must be a bad glove magnet. I even used to start with two new sets each winter, still got wet.

So do we think a leather decathlon pair and some dachstein mittens?

In reply to fire_munki:
Anyone think this'll work?
Simon Wells 08 Dec 2011
In reply to fire_munki:

Dachstiens need to be a close fit, so you can't put them on over gloves easly, I prefer buffalo / pile & pertex to go over gloves for belays etc.

But if you want the Dach mitts as a stand alone mitt they are good. I have some flourescent yellow ones in size 9 (large to me and you) you can have for £10 inc P & P, cheap way to try them out.

I'd also take a pair of fleece clothes for the walk in, I find most gloves to hot for the slog in.

I can emai you some pic's of the Dachs and then post them out?

The Decathlon Leathers are very good! Crazy at £15

In reply to fire_munki:
That would be a bargain but well I aint gonna be a large! My hands aren't exactly girly but they aint no massive hams!
Will look for a second pair not dach's then for belaying. Cheers everyone.

In reply to fire_munki: on the other hand. I used a pair of the decathlon £7 softshell gloves for last season, with a pair of big ski gloves for the belays that i picked up in TKmaxx. no problems there and the decathlon ones are brilliant. still in good condition too.

In reply to fire_munki:
I've found buffalo mittens, can you belay in them?
if so I'm sorted!
Do you use them over gloves or pull off gloves and replace when I belay?
Getting excited for Scotland now.
