I'm considering investing in a hammock& tarp combo for summer (fair-weather) UK wild camping weekends- DD Hammocks 'Travel Hammock / Bivi' which seems to offer the best of both worlds for lightweight wild camping.

Anyone use these or got any tips / experiences of hammock use?

I would think a hammock would be a little restricting in where you can pitch it! They are very comfy though!

Don't you need a tree or two for hammocks to work? Most places I like to wildcamp don't tend to have an abundance of trees.

you can sling-up between rocks and boulders
In reply to Removed User: i hammock camp where i can, and its great, far nicer than tent camping. the downside is that if it is a wet night you might want a bivvy bag too. also if its cold tink about getting a chaep sleepingbag to boost your propper one as you'll feel the cold a lot more in a hammock. having said that i hammocked in the second weekend of january and was toasty and warm.

if you do end up somewhere where there's no trees for miles around then you always have the tarp to rig up in a tent like fashion, although you may want to carry some sort of pole for this if you don't already use trekking poles.

in terms of weight it depends what hammock you get and what tarp as to if its a lighter option than a one man tent, its certainly more comfortable though!

In reply to Removed User: I've got a dd hamock and tarp and use it whenever I can. Slept in it quite comfortably down to around -5 with a sleep mat in it (and sleeping bag of course). My hammock is one of the basic ones - two sheets with zip access down one side - you can rig up a simple mod to keep the upper sheet away from your face and its like a tent - just warmer and off the ground.

In reply to Removed User: Definately get one! They are SO comfy. I will say though, you need a roll mat with them, the first time I camped in mine I didn't use one and had a very cold back. Stuck my roll mat inbetweene the layers next time and the difference was amazing! Also, on a clear night when there is NO chance of rain (rare in Scotland, I know)you do get a crackin' view of the stars that you just don't get in a tent!

If you're feeling flush check out Hennessey Hammocks. A good Canadian make.

have used a henessy but only in warm/tropical areas. certainly good for that.

have my doubts about winter use. even if they handle the cold theyre not that great to hang about in (excuse the pun), cant realisticly cook in one, cant get dressed inside, limited gear storage.
to get around all that youd need extra poles etc so may as well take a tent. tho thered be an advantage in not having to clear the ground.

but for warmer stuff, yeah, good idea. good in wet areas.
if you get a henessey get the snake skins with it. fabulous idea.
