Anyone own any? Trying to get a rough idea of fit. I have found some online that seem good, but have nowhere I locally that I can get my hands on any. I usually get on well with Meindl boots, anyone know if Hanwag are as wide a fit?

In reply to girlymonkey: I switch between Hanwag Alaska, Hanwag Peru and Meindl Borneo (I can't resist buying another set of boots)so would say you won't have a problem. I'm a size 13 and these are my two main sources of boots

In reply to girlymonkey: only real answer is to try them on..

Why do you want these Hanwags? is it price, features?

when it comes to footwear I don't have brand allegiance, I buy what fits and does what I want it to

Even within a brand, fit varies massively,

sorry no help really, but say which Meindl you use and which Hanwag you are looking at for possible rough gauge, but still, you may be 1/2 or full size different, so i would still stand by the try them on.

I know in some cases its not possible, this brings in the cheeky online ordering system which quite a few people do, of ordering 3 or 4 pairs, trying them all on, then sending back unsuitable ones, even more unscrupulous is to send entire order back within 7 days for full refund, then ordering what you require, thanks to distance selling regs..

I've had some Hanwag Tatra GTX walking boots for a couple of year's now & have been very pleased with them. I've had Meindl in the past & would say that the fit is very similar

In reply to girlymonkey: TEsted both brands a fair few times and would echo the others - pretty similar fit

I can't wear goretex lined boots, so I have so little choice. No shops stock anything other than the Meindl Borneo and Scarpa SL, both of which are too stiff for what I am after. I wear through a pair of Meindl Jerseys each year, so thought I might give Hanwag a go to see if they last any longer since they also do non goretex.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like they are worth a shot

In reply to girlymonkey: OK so guess you are looking at Canyon as that's close to a Jersey, Peru is same as Borneo, dont expect them to be any different durability wise, but fit is possibly a bit narrower on toe

Good luck

there are other non gore lined boots out there, but hard to find, Do you still want leather upper?

In reply to gear boy: Where does the Tatra fit in with them? That was the one that I had managed to find in a British based shop.
Yes, definately leather, for Scottish use. I just get ridiculas fungal infections with goretex footwear, I am on the hills most days so all the nasties build up in goretex and my feet go really rank. (I've never understood why you would want it in leather boots, as you still need to treat the leather anyway!)

In reply to girlymonkey: new version of Peru, Sorry a bit out of date with names!, so equivalent to Borneo, so you could just get Borneo, other option to hunt out, Lowa Munro

If you are in the hills a lot then i am surprised Jersey lasted a year!

Gore Tex is a necessary evil in footwear nowadays, it sells more boots, as most people only walk for one or 2 days, it means they don't suffer from sweat build up and damp boots

HTH

In reply to gear boy: Ok, that's helpful, thanks. I will see if my Dad can help me with his linguistic skills to get the canyons then. (I have had borneos in the past, but I like a softer sole for scrambling - I tend to smear lots, and bashing up and down the ben path is much nicer on a soft sole!). I will look into Lowa too, thanks.
When I say they lasted me a year, they should have been replaced a while ago!! I kept them going as long as poss, and last week parts of the sole got down to leather and half the path ended up inside the boots!!
Maybe I should start a campaign for non goretex boots, I can't be the only one in the hills constantly who can't wear goretex!

In reply to girlymonkey: go for it, you only need about 1000 people per size of boot! TBH there are quite a few non gore models in the range of Meindl, Hanwag and Lowa, and I am sure the importers could bring them in for you through a good shop, but there just isnt the volume that there is in gore tex models

TBH most people who want non gore, also want full 3 season weight of borneo and similar, Jersey type weight just arent durable enough, and you may as well have a fabric non gore trainer or mid

In reply to gear boy: I always have problems buying boots as I have teeny feet so there is never enough demand for what I am after. The likes of a Borneo when you go down as small as my feet effectively becomes as stiff as a B1 is for most people. I wouldn't want fabric - they are way too cold and not enough protection from bashes and twists. I have had to accept that I am an anomaly, but it is no less frustrating!!
