Hello

I was at my local climbing wall today and spotted a poster for Toughtags, they are labels for your gear.
They look quite good has anyone used them? I know it will depend on how much you use your gear but, how long do they last before they come off?

In reply to jenkins:
Yes! i have them and the are brilliant, really tough too, need to cut them off gear if you want them removing. Have them on rock, ice and fishing gear. Fast service too, exactly what they say on the tin

how much are these tags ? ...

I use 50p of electrical tape , two diff colours works fine for us..

In reply to jenkins:

Well worth the very small outlay. Have them on all my climbing gear plus outdoor clothing, car keys, camera, you name it. Have had climbing gear returned (even individual nuts) and only last week left a £40 Paramo gilet in the pub after a walk and someone phoned me because it was toughtagged. Went back and got it an hour later.

just had a look at these and I have to say they look good, and is a great idea . But I think they are a bit expensive..

to mark all my kit up it would cost me 25 - 30 pounds , that would replace that lost nut or Krab , and how many people are going to return a nut,hex or the odd cam ?? crag booty ?

They are good and I would like them on my rack , but not for 30 notes...

Seem's like some people return individual nuts, which is heartening.

Thanks for the replies. I have to say I am very tempted but was only considering doing my climbing gear, as I have only just started climbing one lot would be fine. I had not thought about jackets etc, may have to make it a bigger order.

In reply to jenkins: I use Toughtags on all my climbing gear. They are very durable and really do take a lot of hammer. Well worth the money. Hope this helps. Be safe.

In reply to AndyE9:

I think if the gear was labelled up then I would return it, I have in the past when I've found stuff on The Ben. I know they might seem expensive but abbing off a multi-pitch route for whatever reason could well exceed this cost easily.

If your gear is tagged then it becomes a conscious decision for anybody who finds it to then keep it as opposed to not being able to return it. I think (hope) most like minded climbers would be inclined to return the gear in the knowledge of how much it costs.

Don't forget mobile phone numbers often get changed, I have my landline number and UKC username on my tags. Like insurance you have to pay out for it but you don't want to have to use it. I've only lost an ATC since getting my tags and guess what - I got it back, by a walker too not a climber. happy days

In reply to jenkins: Never bought any my self but have tried to remove them from some quickdraws I picked up of here. Even with a knife they are a ball ache to get off..
 Alan Breck 03 Jan 2012
Pretty stupid question I know cos you can put anything that you want....BUT.....what do you reckon is the best "message" to put on the tags?

Name obviously but would it be OK to put your full address. Don't have a mobile at the mo so home telephone number?
 wilkie14c 03 Jan 2012
In reply to Alan Breck: My tags read this:

Paul Blanchard - please return

In reply to jenkins:

Toughtags are great.

Fantastic customer service too.

If you're not sure about something, drop em a line.

They will also do sequential numbering- used them to identify stores kit (rucksack 1, rucksack 2 etc) as well as contact details.

OP ljennings 03 Jan 2012
Thanks for all the responses every one, I think I shall be getting some. I know I want to sequence them. Just need to work out which contact details to put on.

In reply to jenkins:

Thank you for the comments everyone.

Our pricing structure is not best designed for people who need many sheets for all their gear. This is something we recognise and will address with our next website update. We generally offer discounts to customers who want to label a lot of kit, so please email us via our website and see if you can strike a deal!

Here are some top tips when choosing what to have printed on your labels:

Include the international dial code with your phone number e.g. +44 (0)1234 567 890 that way, you’ve got a better chance of getting your kit back should you misplace it abroad (we know of a number of cases when this has happened).

Request a phone number and an email address rather than two phone numbers (e.g. mobile and landline) to provide an alternative way for someone to contact you.

We wouldn’t recommend listing your address, as if someone finds your gear they’re more likely to phone or email you first. Also, it’s not advisable to advertise an address where potentially more climbing gear is kept.

Promises of rewards for returned gear are also an option – anything from chocolates to kisses has been pledged!

We’re happy to do sequential numbering for no extra charge. This is helpful for keeping track of your kit. It’s also very popular with climbing walls/climbing clubs who have a lot of gear to catalogue. Bar/QR codes can also be printed.

You can squash in a lot of detail on with some careful formatting and we’re always on hand to advise how to best fit your preferred text on to the tags.

TTs.

I had some of these:

But these label tags seem like a much better idea!

That's mine ordered anyway.

You have 176 bits of gear that need individual tagging?

How do you get off the ground?
 Chris Sansum 04 Jan 2012
In reply to jenkins:

Even at the most expensive rate £14 for 88 personalised laminated labels seems very reasonable to me. £26 for 176 labels is very good.

It isn't just for when people find gear at the crag, but also when you climb with lots of different partners, and don't always have time to meticulously sort the rack after a day out - a partner is more likely to realise who a bit of gear belongs to if it has your name on it.

I recently returned 4 bits of gear (used to retreat from a route) to someone with a tag on one piece of their gear, even though the email and tel no was out of date on the tag. Without the tag it would not have been possible to track them down. I think a lot of people finding a tagged bit of gear left due to a retreat or emergency or dropped would do the right thing and return it (assuming it wasn't a jammed piece which the owner couldn't be bothered to work on getting out).

I'm going to order some of these.

In reply to jenkins:
I got two sheets of toughtags for my gear and they are much better than the cheaper version touted on here a couple of years back, no complaints about the tags or the service. However I'm moving house in a few months and not looking forward to removing/replacing them
 Richard Carter 04 Jan 2012
I think order some, I'm going to go for:

name
mobile number
email address

I got some a couple of years ago and they have been great. I also went for the same more or less unchanging information you are proposing.

hi dude , I have a huge rack , but don't take it all up at once lol... But if I was going to tag stuff withe these I would tag all my krabs, nuts, cams ... Individually ..

I still think there a wast of money , but that's just my thoughts guess that I'm on my one with that ...

In reply to AndyE9:
Let us not forget the duel purpose - id in case of lost tem and quick id for sorting you mates for your own rack, So don't get green n yella striped toughtags!
OP ljennings 05 Jan 2012
In reply to blanchie14c: How did you label your ATC? I would think the ATC retaining cable is to thin to wrap the labels around without covering the label text up.
 Richard Carter 22 Jan 2012
I'd also like to know
OP ljennings 22 Jan 2012
In reply to jenkins: I have now received mine and think they look smart, only time will tell how long they last. I would say though I filled up the whole character allowance on one line and the text gets covered on most of my crabs I think 20 characters may be a better limit.
OP ljennings 22 Jan 2012
In reply to jenkins: actually 25 characters imho
In reply to jenkins: I have used a similar tag from tags4 for years. My ATC is tagged on the flat underside - I cut the length down to fit as I did with all the tags - and after years of use is still in place. No problem on flat surfaces with my tags which are excellent. None of the tags have ever come off any of my equipment. No good of course for flexible material like ropes. If your tags are similar then they should stay in place.
For info Tags4 website is currently not accepting orders - a new website has just a holding page - I bought from the old site.
 Richard Carter 22 Jan 2012
I asked them about the possibility of orange toughtags and they have decided to start doing them. Put my order in today, apparently they'll be available on the website in a couple of weeks time.

With my tendancy to lose everything I think they're going to save me a lot of money in the long run!
 FreshSlate 22 Jan 2012
In reply to jenkins: They're not a waste of money if you lose a cam. I've bought some in blue. They're pretty good, I'm happy with the product but mainly the idea. Got this idea when I found someone's krab and rang them up, they didn't want it back but was so easy to get in touch with them.
