Heated socks

Hi all,

Apologies if this topic has already been discussed.

I have recently changed boots from the G5 Evo's to the new Phantom Tech HD. Reasons being, I was looking for a boot that was less bulky and lighter - I also had the issue of heel lift in the G5's which I couldn't sort. I know the Phantom Techs aren't as warm as the G5 evo's so my question is, has anyone got any experience with heated socks?  I've stuck with the same type of socks for as long as I can remember because they work for me but I am just curious/concerned and I don't want to find that on my next winter belay my feet are in clip because my new boots aren't as warm as my old ones....

If anyone does have experience with heated socks then recommendations and reviews would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

In reply to Jj.Moreland:

Do you generally suffer from cold feet and is it for Scottish winter? I've climbed in phantoms in Scotland for a few years now and never had a problem.

No experience with heated socks; vapour barrier socks changed my life. https://www.rbhdesigns.com/

I used to suffer from cold feet but once I moved to the G5's I never really had a problem with the cold that I can remember.  It'll mostly be for Scottish winter and maybe the odd trip to around 4000m in the Alps.

I'll see how I get on with then Phantoms when I head back out this season. (Fingers Crossed)

Thanks for the recommendation! Haven't heard of these before! How are they size wise? are they an inner liner for your boots or do you swap the socks out for them?

In reply to Jj.Moreland: they’re made of fleece like material with a vb liner so I wear them with a pair of thin wool m+s socks next to the skin in ski touring boots and for winter walking, basically replacing my normal big woolly socks. Your feet stink but they stay warm. You can buy (rab I think) thinner vb socks which are essentially just the vb liner without the fleece which “compliment” your insulating sock. I’ve heard of people using plastic bags which I’ve never tried and might not be robust enough. The only draw back is the sweaty environment you create loosens plasters, tape, blister pads etc so you need to be confident you won’t get rubbing from your footwear. Take some antibacterial foot powder if your sharing a tent with anyone.

I sometimes use plastic bags, sort of medium weight, I used to ask Cotswold shops for extras. Last OK, probably could be easily punctured by pieces of gravel etc but can't complain at the price.
