Hello! It seems to boil down to a choice between the Hilleberg or Mountain Hardware Trango 2 for car/ferry climbing trips to Lundy, the pass, Hebrides and other wild places. Important considerations are bombproofness and space for hanging out in when the weather turns bad. all round greatness is also important.

which would get your vote?

hilleberg tents are amazing, beautifully made and pitch outer first.

mountain hardwear tents are way over engineered in my opinion. the designers love making pointy angles with the poles instead of curves, in my experience they tend to break...

In reply to Anita Grey: My mate has the trango and its pretty great. Survived 80mph gusts up Ben Nevis without any trouble, so its very bombproof. Nice inside as well, lots of pockets and loft pockets for your bits and bobs. He looked into loads of tents before buying and went for the Trango. He is certainly not dissapointed. Cant rate it highly enough.

Nallo or Nammatj

My parents recently bought a nammatj 2gt from Alpenstock, Stockport. Amazing service.

In reply to Anita Grey:

I have had a Nallo 2 GT for about 7 years. No sign of wear and has been really reliable as well as roomy and stable. Pitching outer first is so great when it's less than pleasant weather. Can't comment on the other tent as I've never used one.

In reply to pwhiteside: If you are not backpacking and sticking to car campng, you are probably better off with the Nammatj 2 GT. It is basically the same but even stronger fabric although just a fraction heavier.

Nallo GT, and then you can essentially have a room each. I can lie down comfortably in the porch of that.

I have a Trango 2 and other than the groundsheet it is a great tent. However for an expensive and otherwise impressive tent the standard groundsheet is woeful, the slightest wet and you will be running out to buy the footprint sheet at extra expense. Why not put a decent groundsheet on in the first place? Have you considered a Terra Nova Quasar?

In reply to Anita Grey:

I'm selling a red Nammatj 2GT in mint condition (with groundsheet) for £375 plus postage (£15 including insurance).

It's only been used for 8 nights camping.

Drop me a line if you'd like photos.

If I were the OP and didn't mind a red tent I'd be jumping all over this.

In reply to Anita Grey: they are quite different tents really, one is a lightweight trekking tent and the other is a winter mountaineering tent. The trango is nearly twice the weight, much smaller vestibule but a lot bigger internally, about the size of a three man hilleberg tent. Camping in winter get a trango, in summer hilleberg. The hilleberg is more versatile really, it will do snow perfectly but is more sensitive, it is also easier to cook in the hilleberg.

I've got a trango, love it but is a lot more faff to put up than a hilleberg but I got it for £200 basically new so it was a no brainer
