this years quite cold in tokyo (with windchill a few days down to -5c expected), and i want to insulate my daughter nicely.

now, i know how to insulate myself in the cold, as others here will also. so, im after ideas from the alpine world, preferably tried and tested ones and the colder the better (i know some of you inhabit Nth america and scandinavia).
im not inspired by what i see commercially available (i sense the designers havent spent much time in sub-zero portaledges), and tho im sure they work, i have a fathers need to do it better, cooler and more hardcore than the next father.

i have plenty of resources from the alpine sector to hack up and reanimate

I´ve pushed my sons around enough in -10/-20 and the Scandinavians pesumably have it worse.
Campanies like Odenwälder have the top-end pretty well covered, you can pay ca £150 for one of their better bags. There are loads of design features in the better bags that even the most experienced portaledge inhabitant would never think of, starting with the safety strap access for the various seat systems out there.

great, cheers. will look em up asap and if i cant plagarize the ideas will consider buying.

weve gone with other scandinavian stuff on the same premise (viking children raised on icebergs, well known design culture etc).

any ideas re seal blubber and reindeer hides also appreciated.
In reply to ice.solo: I don't fit your criteria but Stokke built their stuff from an engineering perspective rather than follow the usual.

They have a winter kit approach that might be worth exploring for inspiration. Buggy insulation/wind protection. Down sleeping bags, sheepskin inner and insulated footmuff.

In reply to ice.solo: In Scandinavia you don't insulate the buggy. You use an insulated bag inside the buggy called a vognpose.

Voksi vognpose (vogn = wagon, pose = bag)

In Germany fur sleeping bags like this one

are commonly used throughout winter.

Another approach used by the Scandinavians (and others) is to carry baby (so they get your body heat) and wear a coat to go over both of you, eg
http://www.mamdesign.net/carrying/clothes/mamcoat.html

Either way, I found merino wool thermals and woolly ski socks went a long way to keeping baby warmer, however many layers you then add over the top.

Columbia and Spotty Otter do down clothing. It depends a bit on how big baby is, and if they're likely to want to come out of buggy/carrier to crawl/toddle around - it's all very well insulating the buggy until you 6 month old decides they really want to crawl around the snow and eat it.....mine did!
