karabiners or carabiners

The word comes from the german word 'Karabinerhaken' which is german for hook with a carbine...

but in all seriousness, its only the yanks that use carabiner, and therefore there in the minority and must be wrong.

If we follow your rules shouldn't that be a karbine? Or perhaps 'karabiner'. Words mutate when then cross languages. Furthermore, the French, Italians etc don't use the word 'c/karabiner', so I would guess that the Yanks are actually the majority when it comes to English speaking climbers!

I'm not sure what the correct spelling is, but neither does anyone. Different manufacturers even spell it differently. Perhaps we should just call them mousquetons (a hook you hang your musket on?).
