La sportiva TX4 (new model) complaint

Anyone got a pair of these ?

Had the retro ones which are almost identical to the new TX4. I can't understand why they've put some weak mesh all around the sole of the shoe. If used for scrambling the mesh tears/ breaks when jamming your feet!

As far as I can tell it's purely aesthetic damage, but the selling point of the new TX4 is that it can take a resole, but I'm not going to do that on a shoe that looks absolutely trashed (even though the uppers might be alright)

The other point is most the mesh has fallen off in the environment leaving a trail of plastic/micro plastic.... Not great is it ?

Yep. Design flaw.

Don’t they make leather versions anymore? I have had a pair that I was very happy with. Switched to TX2’s though because they’re lighter and more compressible. Have them in both mesh and leather. Wouldn’t use the mesh ones for cracks. But they’re ok in fair weather. I use the leather ones everywhere below the snow line. Love them.

Aye got a pair recently, only been out in them a couple of times and not particularly impressed. Did a slabby grade 3 on Fuar Tholl in them and a lot of the mesh is torn already.

In reply to Aled Williams:

Oh no, I had no idea as I like TX4, looks like TX4 is no longer made? And replaced with TX4 Evo?

Edit: same with TX2?

And TX5 too, because La Sportiva have zero stock in any TX5 apart from size 37, so maybe they're about to change them too.

Why do manufacturers insist on "improving" products that are in their sweet spot, and make them ****

Don't panic. The TX4 Evo is the old leather TX4, just with a new midsole that makes resoling easier. I can discern no difference between them having been wearing a pair of the Evos for the past few months after years of wearing the old TX4.

The TX4 Evo ST is the mesh one mentioned above. Both on the page you linked.

I actually wonder if these things get tested.......

I think there is still a mesh below the rand around the front of the mid-sole in the new leather version, which is what people are finding is disintegrating.

I don't know why they changed them. I'm on my second resole on both of my pairs of the old style, so the older model can be resoled, multiple times.

I've got a pair of the new ones I bought when they were on offer when they first came out, but I've not worn them yet as I'm waiting for my other pairs to eventually die. Which might be a while because I have 4 pairs, one pair still new in box, one pair lightly used, and two pairs on their second resole.

If you can't tell they're by far my favorite shoe!

Thanks!

Was a bit confused as ive just got some TX4's and i love them but no mesh anywhere - looks like its just the ST model with the mesh.

Got you - plastic mesh overlay on the midsole rather than mesh in the upper or rand as I'd thought was being suggested.

As you can probably tell the overlay on my Evos is fully intact after months of wear...

Anyway, at least I now understand the issue the OP is having and will watch out to see if I experience this going forward.

In reply to CantClimbTom:

See my response to Jordan-L, in that I'd misunderstood the issue. There is an overlay on the midsole, but the OP and I are having different experiences with it...

In reply to More-On:

My three pairs of TX4 have all had the side wall rupture at the same time as the sole wore down to the blue midsole. So absolutely no point in resoling, as the uppers were shot, too.

I am quite light on my feet, so maybe other people have soles wear out before uppers?

The lacing system on the TX5 is rubbish compared to the TX4.

A TX4 with a TX5 sole would have been perfect, though the uppers would probably have died before the thicker sole unit...

Oh, and mesh on shoes? IME, it lasts about five minutes. The abrasion from rock, and abrasion against itself as the shoe flexes, wears holes in, well, maybe a bit more than five minutes, but way, way before any significant wear to the sole.

I had my B5s resoled with a vibram commando mountain sole when the original sole wore out, they're phenomenal on UK approaches (grass & mud) now, and have a heel step to make VFs easier/safer .
