[Nano Jacket- full articulation, 3 kb]The Marmot Nano shell jacket is light. And not just rather light, or quite light, but ridiculously light. At 227 grams, it only weighs a bit more than a couple of quickdraws.

Toby Archer extols the virtues of this lightweight waterproof from Marmot...

How does it compare to Marmot's much cheaper Precip jacket ? especially as a jacket carried more for emergency use rather than when expecting to be out in heavy rain all day

Hey Doug,

You have posted an excellent question with regards to how the Nano and Precip jackets compare.

The Precip Jacket is a good multi purpose value for money jacket which is ideal for emergency use just in case you get caught out. The Nano Jacket is a significant jump up in performance when compared to the Precip Jacket and would be something worth looking at for fast and light mountaineering requirements.

The Nano uses Gore's Paclite fabric as the main waterproof membrane so you would notice a much better breathability and long term performance when compared to the Precip Jacket. The Nano also has a much more fitted cut which allows for good range of movement and is not affected by the use of a harness or rucksack hip belt. The Nano's hood also fearures a wired brim (which the Precip Jacket doesn’t) so you to shape the peak of the hood to deflect a strong side winds or driving rain coming in sideways.

Marmot’s Chamonix based athlete Will Sim has been giving some excellent feed back on the performance of the Nano jacket he has been using over the past 4 months on a number of alpine routes.

I personally recommend the Nano jacket for summer alpine use or long rock routes in North Wales or Scotland where you want something light, small packing but still dependable if the weather turns nasty.

If you need any further advise about this product or any other styles in Marmot’s range then please feel free to call the Marmot UK office on 015395 63616.
