I've just discovered this nice "little" product and was wondering if anyone has had a go with one?

I'm still self-belaying regularly on a shunt, often without a backup I admit. Due to its limitations and the fact that mine really doesnt like moving up the rope as you climb (even when weighted) I'd quite like a better device.

So, anyone had much experience of the Asap, or the rocker for that matter - similarly priced and for the same purpose.

In reply to annakyn: if you want to kill yourself use the asap .

taking falls onto dynamic rope is not what this is made for.

it is an industrial, rope access bit of kit not for climbing. read what the recomendations for use from petzl are!

In reply to theboycleaver: Gotcha thanks. Someone had just reccommended it in another post, but looking at the pezl site and the videos I have to admit it didnt look ideal... What about the rocker?

In reply to annakyn: if your self belaying, why not climb on static rope? then you can use the asap, no?

In reply to annakyn:
For climbing up (as opposed to downclimbing) its really no different to using an ascender. The toothed wheel doesn't turn that way, the teeth just 'ride' over the rope like the teeth on an ascender cam.

What you pay the extra money for (as an industrial user) is the way it has to be 'dragged' down the backup rope as you abseil on the main one. The toothed wheel rotates as it goes down, and there's just enough friction that the device as a whole stays above you, keeping the potential fall factor down.

I've never used an ASAP when climbing for fun (I have used a Rocker a few times). I've used both in a similar situation to protect a climb up a truss tower at work - going up there's nothing in it, downclimbing the ASAP is marginally better, its less prone to jamming and it stays above you on the rope. (The rocker is actually below you until you fall past it, though it does occasionally jam and need to be moved down the rope by hand.) Those teeth are scary, if you made a habit of downclimbing I suspect they'd inflict a lot of wear and tear on a dynamic rope.

For my money, a Rocker is better. Its also cheaper than an Asap (they're not that similarly priced, though both are more expensive than a Shunt).

In reply to annakyn: ASAP for use with 10.5 to 13mm semi static ropes (some times referred to as low stretch ropes or static ropes, caving ropes etc). I use a shunt at work and have considered using an ASAP with an ASAP'Sorber (screamer to you and me) so as to not have to keep manually moving my shunt. I wouldnt like the teeth on the ASAP on my own ropes but as I use ropes bought by the company and can just replace them its not so bad.

Someone mentioned climbing using a semi static rope? I hope I misunderstood the advice given.
