How do Petzl Ball Lock, Petzl Triact Lock and DMM Locksafe compare with one another? Is Petzl Triact Lock the same mechanism as DMM Locksafe? Is any one of these more pleasant to use or longer lasting than the others? Any other comments or recommendations?

Intended application is belay krab with a Neox / Grigri.

I've been using the Balllock quite a bit and really like them for rock/summer, but as soon as the thicker winter gloves come out I find them a pain to operate. I have some friends who love them for winter/ice as well so YMMW. I also find the mechanism prone to ice up in wet/cold conditions. I went back to regular screwgates for ice/alpine.

I haven't used the others much but I suspect the DMM and Triact are much the same in operation.

For summer rock single pitch I think it really comes down to which one feels the nicest in your hands.

Yes, Triact and Locksafe are much the same thing.

I've only really played around a bit with the Locksafe one as part of centre kit. Advantages over a classic screwgate with instructing groups where you can't forget to do the screw up, the gate becoming jammed after loading or the screw undoing itself due to vibration (incorrectly oriented top rope, for example).

I've only got a standard DMM twist lock in my personal kit - usually used for just clipping myself onto something quickly.

I'm tempted to suggest something with the Kwicklock (DMM) or Twistlock (Petzl) gates, since there's not much risk of the rope running over the gate, and are slightly less faff than the triple-action barrels,

I’ve used a green triple action DMM krab on my Grigri for a long time. I’d be happy with a Petzl triple action or ball lock.

Personally I don’t think a twist lock is secure enough for attaching a gri gri - but I’m probable being paranoid.

As mentioned triact and the lock safe operate the same.

For sport I tend to like kwiklovks and have never had one come undone for my trad belay carabiner I use the lock safe as more chance of ropes running across the gates (have had screwgates undo themselves before)

DMM Ceros is the king of GriGri carabiners. I’ve got the lock safe version because of rescue requirements and really don’t find it to be a faff because the captive part keeps everything lined up for one handed operation. Tri-lock ovals on gear whilst lead climbing on the other hand are the devil’s work.
