Last summer I bought myself one of those mountain hardwear subzero duvets in the sale to keep me nice and toasty in the alps. Anyway, to cut a long story short I would like it to keep me toasty in Scotland too but it isn't waterproof (ie NOT the SL model).
Do you reckon I could use a proofing spray on it? Would it work? Would it knacker it? And would you recommend one in particular for the job?
Many thanks in advance,
Lucy

There's a spray-on option, then should you want to wash it, there's something to wash it in that'll proof the whole lot a bit, too.

My down jacket isn't proofed at all, and has survived many Scotland trips (usually only carried 'in case', and worn only in the tent, though). The pertex outer (it's a rab one) is actually pretty water resistant anyhow - it takes more than a shower for water to get through. Snow melting might be a different matter......

In reply to Lucy: The jacket you've bought has a 1000mm coating on the outer fabric, however it would be adviseable to use TX direct (or similar) if you want better water repellency (especially useful in Scotland). We (Mountain Hardwear) will be making a women's version of our very popular Below Zero SL Hooded Jacket for winter 2002, so maybe you can get one of those once your standard Sub Zero has worn out?

In reply to Rob W - Mountain Hardwear: I love my duvet and hope it won't wear out- are you implying that MH goods have a built in obsolescence!!? Nice to hear that you are extending your womens technical clothing lines though.
Thanks for advice Rob and Carolyn.

In reply to Lucy, and Rob W - Mountain Hardwear:

Shouldn't worry about your duvet wearing out too quickly, Lucy - mine's about 6 years old and only just starting to look a bit thin. If MH ones don't last, we want to know why, Rob!!!

But I'd second the thanks for expanding the women's range. I may well now hang on another year before replacing my duvet. Oh, and Rob, you don't know if anyone actually stocks the MHW women's gloves, do you?

In reply to Carolyn and Lucy: Design jackets to fall apart after 1 year? What a great idea! Seriously though, all our products are designed to last and you'll get many years hard use out of your jacket no problem at all. I was only suggesting that if you wanted to upgrade your current jacket then we do have a womens version of the Below Zero SL Hooded Jacket coming for F'02 (next winter). On the Glove front, try Rock+Run if they don't have the style you're looking for they can order them in no problem. Have a good winter!

In reply to Rob W - Mountain Hardwear:

Thanks.....Rock & Run do stock at least some of the styles, so that's great. Wanted to find out if I needed a small or medium before getting anyone to order them, so that should do the trick.

Now, we wouldn't really believe you'd make jackets to fall apart after a year, would we? Although my goretex is just coming up for that, so I"ll be back if it self-destructs!
