Using something water soluble to protect from water? I've a feeling that won't work.

In reply to Removed User: I postulated on here recently that Nikwax Direct In is watered down PVA glue. No-one was able to confirm or deny.

It's only water soluble in its liquid state

Ah, good good. so once its 'gone off' it won't turn back to white gloop when wet then. Maybe it could work.

I'm afraid not. That said it's not particularly soluble but given time it will dissolve. You wouldn't want to sail across the Atlantic in a fabric boat that had been proofed in PVA.

I realise it's often used for sealing walls and stuff but it only works because it doesn't get very wet very often for very long.

In reply to Removed User: Even if it worked at keeping the rain out surely it would reduce it's breathablitiy substantially.

If you look at the majority of PVA containers then you'll see that it's suitable for outdoor use aswell.

That as well as proofing a jacket is hardly in the same league as sailing the atlantic.

Fair enough but I'm just recalling what I was taught and my experience of trying to use it as an adhesive on an outdoor product.

I had a quick look around the interweb and couldn't find a great deal on it but here's something that gives a few clues: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-polyvinyl-acetate.htm

See one of the paras near the bottom. It looks like water resistance can be improved by adding plasticisers perhaps that the trick..
