I want to buy some Walsh's, but nobody seems to stock them around here. Anyone know a decent mail order site that does?
Tried Needlesports etc, no joy....

I fancy the Walsh Trainer Xtreme boot style, any experience?

In reply to colski:

no, boots were quite fashionable in the late 70's (no... there is no joke coming). its often felt that "boots give your ankles support" which is a little bit of lie. they, like hiking boots will never stop you going over, what they will do is stop you bashing your ankles on all the rocks you'll be running through. is fell running something your new to? walsh had a bad patch where by they just couldnt get the stuff out (at one time you had a choice of two - walsh trainer and racer) and others, like nb nipped in. i wore pb's and trainers for ages and they are very good shoes, but from the moment i wore the nb's (straight out of the box!!) i knew i would go back.

Surely the Raid Extreme would be better for the Cuillin ridge - better sole for rock??

In reply to colski: Don't forget the Innov8 Mudroc, worth considering depending on what you're after.

I've just sold my Walsh Extremes and bought a pair of these (though I had bought the wrong size of walshes this year, I'm sure the last has changed on the new version).

So far so good. Will use them on the KIMM this year, and the Welsh 300s this weekend. Somewhat more comfort, but won't last as long....

In reply to Matt C:

they have a bit more cushioning and a less aggressive sole. you always tend to "feel" the studs through the sole of your foot in the original treads, so when hard ground is encountered it can feel uncomfortable. the originals do stick very well to wet rock and the low profile does mean less leverage on the foot though... but you pays your money etc.

the welsh 300s eh? you beast!! im sorry it was too easy. do you like the extra cushioning? whenever i get marooned on trails in my road shoes i feel like a pissed up lily savage in me high heels!

In reply to stu_not_at_work: Ahem. Well, it's a thought eh...there'd be quite a few of them though!

At least the re wouldn't be so much uphill anyway....

To be honest, the ankle position is still lower than road or trail shoes. Runs like a walsh, not quite so low, but more comfy around the forefoot for me. But we'll see after the erm, 300s. Should be a good test!

hope the weather stays cool and the springs run fresh for you!! you dont know anyone who wants to be a fill in partner for the kimm, long score do you?
In reply to colski:

The Sportiva Boulder or a similar shoe from Montrail are probably a better bet for Skye.

Inov8 seem bloody excellent for regular fell running but probaly a bit spiky for Skye.

In reply to stu_not_at_work: Not aware of anyone without a partner at present but will keep an ear out.

I remember finding the spring on the contour round to Yr Elen one hot summer's day...like manna from heaven. We were recceing the Carnedds from the north heading for Oggy - on the hottest, most humid day of the year. Although I drank myself silly at the spring, and most of the way home, and throughout the night, I didn't pee until the next day! I think we'll be a bit more organised this time...
