I'm doing the Welsh 3000 this weekend starting at 7am on Sat from Snowdon Summit.

The weather is looking pretty fowl. Current forecasts indicate moderate sleet/rain and winds up to 60 MPH.

I've got the following softshells and I'm not sure what to take but have come to the following conclusions...

Montane Duality - Pertex/micro fibremix - Hood of same combination - unwired.

Probably ideal, although not the warmest in evil conditions.

Montura No Angel - (Powershield/Schoeller + DWR) Powerstretch hood -

More suited to Alpine conditions, unlikely to perform well in v. wet conditions due to laminate construction rather than wicking combination.

Marmot DriClime - Almost identical to Duality - No Hood, shorter cut

Would choose Duality over this due to no hood (Better suited to windy days at the crag)

Rab Vapourise - Polartec 100 Microfibre lining, Pertex Equilibrium outer - Fully wired hood.

Most technical jacket, but maybe too warm? Not tested this in anger yet, so i'm interested how it may perform.

Buffalo Tecmax - Buffalo Tecmax pile + Pertex 6 outer - Too warm for high activity, wore this in the Alps last winter and it was hot.

I'm wearing a merino base and I'll have a paclite smock in the pack.

Thoughts?

First thought: You have too many jackets.

Second (more helpful) thought: Rab VR, but nothing underneath it, because
1) warm enough not to need a base layer
2) feels sexy.

In reply to KeithW: Are you suggesting I do it Naked other than the VR? Kinky.

In reply to g taylor: Seriously, if winds are up to 60 mph, you will experience gusts up to 80 mph, I would not be on grib goch in those winds, sorry but you will get blown around.

What was the weather forecast you have seen? Friday looked OK last time I checked. If gusts are to 60 then you may 'just' get through. Even then, rather you than me.

I was up on Glyder Fach/Fawr last week and even in 40-50 mph winds, with gusts getting over 60 mph, it was dificult on the wet boulders.

I'm planning on running over the Elidirs tonight as the winds shouldn't be too bad, on thursday I had organised a run up snowdon but they may be called off due to high winds, but then at 5 am on Friday I'm due to run up Elidir to support someone and the weather at the moment looks suprisingly kind.

Good luck, but we've had some big winds in the past few weeks.

In reply to g taylor: ???!!! Think last time I did it, I wore a t-shirt, an old rugby shirt, and a cheap cagoule...when it poured with rain I tied a scarf round my head. Fashion is everything on the hills

You're in Wales man! Buy a cheap Kagool.

Put the rest on eBay and get yourself a little runaround.

On a serious note, and taking from that list you don't mind spending money on gear, one word:

Paramo

Top and bottom for warmth and comfort in snow/ sleet/ hail/ rain...

Main Entry:fowl
Function: noun
1 : a bird of any kind -- compare WATERFOWL, WILDFOWL
2 a : a cock or hen of the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus); especially : an adult hen b : any of several domesticated or wild gallinaceous birds -- compare GUINEA FOWL, JUNGLE FOWL
3 : the meat of fowls used as food

Any coat that keeps chickens off will do.

My turn for the pedant hat.

Foul not fowl.

Fowl is birds like.

Running or walking?

In reply to g taylor:

Can't comment on the rest of that little list, but I wore my Rab VR smock for a rather wet and windy walk on the Glyders last Saturday (with nothing underneath it, much better without imo) and it performed as brilliantly as usual. Certinally not too warm (and I run fairly hot), and whilst I stuck my ancient rubbishy 'waterproof' on whenever I stopped for a bit, but it wasn't really neccessary (would have been if I was stopping more, but that's unlikely to concern you for this I'd imagine).

I had a gamma but sold it, excellent jackets but not incredibly effective when wet.

P.S. The weather forecast stinks, so postpone things?

The weather forecast has stunk for the last two weekends, but has been wrong...

In reply to Simon Caldwell: Not around here it hasn't? well not last weekend anyway.

The wind station at Clogwyn Station measured 110 mph gusts last saturday night. And the MWIS predicted gusts over 100 mph, not bad.

Someones attempting the Paddy Buckley Round (Snowdonian version of the Bob Graham Round) on Friday/Saturday so he's hoping for reasonable weather, but its been strong winds for weeks. Even though we have clear spells most days, I can't remember the last day without rain.
 Simon Caldwell 06 Dec 2006
In reply to IainRUK:
It was very wrong for other parts of the country though. It got the wind right but the predicted constant heavy rain was mostly restricted to overnight, so we got out climbing/running after all
The weekend before was wrong in Wales too wasn't it?
 Banned User 77 06 Dec 2006
In reply to Simon Caldwell: For the Sunday, it was about as predicted. The saturday wasn't as bad as forecast though.

really? i've worn mine in various states of rain and be fine - it does wet out eventually (only happened once tho) and even then i was fine as it still kept me warm...
OP g taylor 06 Dec 2006
In reply to Wilbur: The problem with Powershield is that it takes ages to dry out.

18.

I'd go for the Duality. With a Solo in my bag.

18?!

even i don't get near that!

Rab VR
Rab VR with hood
Gamma SV
Gamma mx hoody
Mixmaster
MH Tempest SL
Montane pertex windtop job

I think that's it!

the MX hoody is used and abused for everything. i agree it takes time to dry but even when wet you're kept at the right temperature. it's fab for bikign and climbing at all times of yr IMO... I think the Gamma SV is crap btw - you can't tighten the collar and the elasticated waist doesn't fasten properly so you can't batten that down either!

You are probably the only one qualified to comment on that lot ! - personally I have a nylon faced fleece and a waterproof which does for everything.
