No not chalk, the fluffy ball thats always in them when you buy them. I've never known and neither do any of my climbing mates so it's over to you UKC.

I've honestly no clue what you are talking about. I've bought, lost and rebought/found/got given at least 10 chalk bags in my life and not a single one has come with a "fluffy thing" inside it.

Perhaps I'm getting some kind of special treatment? I like to think you only get given them if you're an extra good climber but I doubt it.

I bought a la sportiva one and that has a small tube of fleece material loose in side and a climb x one that has a ball of fleece type stuff in. It's not the same fabric as the lining.

It looks like it's to help applying the chalk but I don't really know.

That is notoriously difficult so perhaps you are correct.

But I suspect it's a kitten.

I always put a bobble from a bobble hat (cut or make one) in my chalk bags to help application. I've never known them to be commercially available, now I wish I had sold the idea.

I recall Ian Parsons of this parish bouldering at Kenilworth Castle with, unknown to him, a deceased sparrow in his chalk bag. So feathery (though decomposing)... but not fluffy.

Pray how could that have got there?

It is for dabbing holds and allowing an even application. I got one in a Sportiva bag recently. Very useful and stops the need to shower a greasy hold ineffectively if using just hands.

And here was me thinking that you were meant to apply chalk to your hands...

In reply to Fishmate:

Thanks I thought someone would know!

Definitely replacing mine with a kitten.

Is it a pof/resin applicator? Fill with crystal pof and fine pof will sprinkle out when crushed in the fingers or hit on a hold...
