I’m looking at doing this in early May. I have a 30m dynamic single rope I use for scrambling. Will this be long enough? I’ve read conflicting advice, some saying 30, 40 or 50m. Thanks.

It'll be fine.

UKC in a nutshell here.

A vague question, followed by a flippant reply from a regular user.

Dangerous indeed for someone who isn't used to the varying quality of advice on this website.

A 50m rope would make the abseil simpler and therefore safer.

Yes, many scramble down instead of abseiling at the ‘Le Mauvais Pas’ but a fall here could easily be terminal.

That's the thing with scrambling, though, isn't it?

op: you can mess around with a shorter rope and climbing down part of it - but if you're wanting to abseil it, just take a rope you're sure is long enough.

Alternatives: climb down; or strongest member of the party lowers any others then climbs down (fine with a 30m scrambling rope); or do the ridge from north to south so this section can be climbed up instead.

And, of course, the option that should always be in the bag - turn back if unhappy.

It's quite easy and relatively safe to scramble down to where it steepens and make a short ab from there. A 30m rope will indeed be fine for that.

Everyone needs to make their own decisions in the mountains and even the best online advice is only going to get you so far.

Thanks all. I think I’ll take a 50m rope.

Warning: incoming UKC pedantry alert!

You have used 'the' and 'Le' when 'Le' alone would have sufficed. Or even just 'Bad Step' instead of the fancy pants French.
