Can I use Fjallraven G1000 Polycotton in Scotland?

Hi all, I am going on trip to the highlands next weekend.
We're climbing Ben Nevis and potentially some other Munros.

I am well aware its recommended to climb Nevis in fully synthetic clothes,
but the mates I am heading up there with gifted me some Fjallraven Vidda Pros.
They use a 35% cotton polycotton blend.

Does anyone have experience using Fjallravens material or similar cotton blends in the wet conditions of Scotland? Would I be fine using em? Or am I better off bringing something else?

Hi frisian!

It's tipping down outside. You could go out and see how your coat does?

As long as they have been fully waxed (if they are new they should be already waxed) they will be fine. I use them as my go to winter hill trousers in Scotland

I use some FR trousers made of the G-1000 fabric, which I think will be the same as you're talking about. They're really good for the hills (I live in Scotland) but they're not fully waterproof. They're meant to be water resistent (my understanding is that this is not the same as waterproof), so they'll take some light rain and dry off fast when the rain stops. In heavier rain they'll get wet and the rain will go through and you'll be uncomfortable/cold and I guess they'll lose their windproofing. I always carry waterproof trousers as well.

You'll be fine, just make sure you carry some rain trousers as well.

G-1000 is meant to be water-resistant, durable and comfortable, while still having a reasonable drying time.

Remember, Fjällräven is from Sweden. The hill conditions there are not that different from Scotland.

I used to hill walk with poly cotton trousers for years. You’ll be fine.

Thanks a lot all that have replied!
Sounds like they are coming along then, as well as my rain trousers!

I really would check them out in the rain beforehand. There's nothing worse than being on the Big Bad Ben and finding out that your kit is sub-optimal. I've climbed enough hills in bad weather to realise how miserable (and potentially hypothermic) poor waterproofs can be. Pick a nice day if you can!

I also have the Vidda Pros. I've found doing a Nikwax waterproofing wash and waxing helps the water resistance. As others have said they are not actually waterproof so I'd recommend taking waterproof overtrousers with you too in case it's starts properly chucking it down.

That said, I have found they are quite heavy. I typically only use them for camping/shorter walks/outdoors activities - I've not tried a strenuous walk due to their bulk. If I was planning climbing significant hills I'd probably opt for something lighter - though I might just be a weakling.

Congrats on the gift, they are great trousers.
