Hi, we've got flights to Toulouse late Sept, and are wondering about a good place to centre ourselves. We've had Font Romeu recommended, and once stayed in Luz-st-Savouir.

Planning mainly walks, up hills to 2900m-ish, nothing too serious (eg. Mont Carlit).  We are both climbers & possess via ferrata kit, but are leaving the ropes etc. at home this time.

Thanks for any recommendations in advance! Phil

The Ariege is probably the closest part of the Pyrenees, will you have a car or relying on public transport ? If the later, there are trains up to the frontier at La Tour de Carol with lots of stops in places such as Tarascon, Ax les Thermes, Merens etc. I've stayed in/around Ax les Thermes several times, mostly as I have friends living there, but its a good base for a few days, especially if you have a car.

Hi Phil

There's a really good site, climbing7.com, which describes lots of mountain walks, but mainly in the Pyrenees.
