Of the thousands who reach the summit of Great Shunner Fell, perhaps only a few have it as their primary objective, with the sights of the rest being set on Kirk Yetholm. This rounded lump sits just before the halfway point for northbound Pennine Wayfarers and occupies a commanding position at the heads of Swaledale and Wensleydale. At 716m it has substantial stature, rubbing shoulders with the Three Peaks to the south, and offers a delightful moorland experience, in the summer months graced by nodding cottongrass, yelping curlews and aerobatic lapwings.
