Out in the Wild West, it's not just the giants that deserve your attention: often the medium-sized hills are satisfyingly shapely, gnarled and rugged. Harter Fell is one of Lakeland's most graceful peaks, culminating in a satisfying set of rocky turrets. As if that weren't already sufficient inducement to lace up your boots, Hard Knott cradles a real, live Roman fort in its lap. How many hills of any size can compete with that?
