Hi all,

We're going to be in the Highlands in the coming days having just missed the good weather....

Please can anyone make any recommendations for good lower level walks?

We have a car so can be flexible on location.

We were originally targetting Ben Nevis via CMD, Beinn Eighe and Ben Lomond but the wind looks problematic.

Cheers

If you can access the entire highlands there might be some summits somewhere that won't be too windy. Ben Cruachan doesn't look too bad on Wednesday so far (as of writing this):

Failing that there are some ideas here.

The forecast for Kintyre doesn't look too bad either.

Get the Walkhighlands app. Lots of stuff on there with accompanying maps. You can download up to ten (?) walks at a time and they work offline. Here's an example just south of Fort William. You can extend up to the upper loch using their map

It's well worth a short hop over to the island of Gigha (just off the west coast of Kintyre). You can pick up a nifty little walks leaflet (free) as you get off the little ferry. No need to take a car over, plenty of parking space at Tayinloan and you can do some nice walks from the ferry pier on the island.

If you are down that way with an ok forecast, Castle Dounie is worth a walk. It's above Crinan, starting from the Crinan harbour car park, and I think it's the best viewpoint in mid Argyll.

Also in the same area, worth exploring Kilmartin Glen. Not really a walk as such, but a huge collection of Bronze age and Neolithic monuments, cup and ring marked stones and Dunadd Fort, where they crowned the kings of Dalriada. It's outdoor stuff, but not really a proper walk. It is very interesting though

Oh, and the Atlantic rainforest at Taynish nature reserve is spectacular too

When I was there last year, I took my boot off and placed my foot in the 'footprint' in the rock. It fitted perfectly! Should I tell them at Holyrood where to send the crown?

Well, the thing is, that with a shoe on, mine fits perfectly. Maybe I need to fight you for it! 😜
