Hi folks,

I've looked around but the only Munro forum I found seems to charge a membership fee to post queries on their forum so I shall resort to my tried and trusted friends on UKClimbing instead!

I'm visiting the girlfriend in Glasgow this Saturday and she wants to get out for a walk / scramble. I'm flying up and she doesn't have her own transport so options are hire a car for the weekend or preferably use our wonderful public transport - bus or train.

Can anyone recommend a day trip from Glasgow using public transport to bag a Munro?

Thanks,
Marq

In reply to Marq: You’re spoiled for choice but the final selection will depend on your fitness and experience. Corrour and Tyndrum are two classic starting points but I’d check the snow conditions first, it may be heavy going. For more info you could post here:- http://www.outdoorsmagic.com/forum/forum.asp?sp=&v=8

Or check the map on the munro site you looked at.

Ahh brings back memories! First hill I done any climbing on in Scotland was the Cobbler by public transport! Was slightly taken aback by how far Arrocchar train station was from Arrochar! To do the Cobbler from the station is a fair hike!

I wouldn't go as far as Tyndrum (and definitely not as far as Corrour), Arrochar is a pretty good bet, station is bout a half hour walk from the start of Narnain, I reckon getting Narnain, Ime and the Cobbler done in the same day as flyin up to Glasgow might be a bit ambitious as well but I'd definitely reccommend something in the Arrochar Alps.

Alternatively you could get the good ol Citylink upto Ardlui and get yourself up Ben Vorlich, crackin views from any one of these hills, plus on a clear day you'll get a crackin view of Loch Lomond from Vorlich.

DEFINTIELY CHECK THE WEATHER FIRST THOUGH, all of these hills can be bloody dangerous when the weather closes in, just cause they're close to Glasgow doesn't make them any easier.

Best of luck mate.

The Campbeltown bus is handier than the train for the Cobbler/Narnain/Ime .

got to be arrochar alps i'd say, as per above. campbelltown bus route to arrochar is better value than going the same distance to ardlui on the fort william bus route (don't ask me why and is £9.90 for day return at the moment), the arrochar 3 of ime, narnain and the cobbler are a winner although surprisingly tough going at this time of year and challenging when racing to catch the bus back. another corker is to stay on the bus a few mins out of arrochar and get off at the rest and be thankful for a trip up the ex munro ben an lochain... lovely hill, don't be put off by the ex status. oh, buses are limited- a 9am from glasgow is a must at this time of year, then there's another at 13.00 or 13.30, then at 18.00. when are you getting into the city? i was on the cobbler last week and i don't drive- the light is now good until teatime so if you're only going to make the lunchtime bus you could maybe do just one of the 3 (obvious choice is the spectacle of the cobbler) then be back in the village for teatime for a pleasant pub lunch and beer on loch long at the ben arthur bothy before the 8pm bus home. buses back to city are around 14.20 and 20.00...

ps- oh and you're definitely likely to need the crampons judging from my last two recent trips to arrochar...

In reply to Marq: I've not done it for a long time, but I can't believe the Citylink bus timetables have changed that much. We used to regulaly use the bus to the Arrochar region, southern Highlands (Beinn an Dothaid, Beinn Dorain) and even Glencoe. We were interested in climbing routes, but just for hill walking you will have all the options around Tyndrum as well.

It helps if you are in the West End, allowing you to get on the bus up there.

Another option is to get the train to Crianlarich. An easy walk into Cruach Ardrain, climb up Y Gully to the summit, across to Ben Tulaichean and then back. A great day out.

In reply to Marq: Yet another train option is to go to Bridge of Orchy and do Beinns Dorain, Dothiadh etc. (however you spell them). Ben Lui and that group is in range from Tyndrum.

Many thanks for the many suggestions.

I'm getting the flight up on the Friday night so a 9am bus shouldn't be impossible. My girlfriend lives a stone throw away from the Buchannan bus station as well, which is handy.

Noted on the weather forecasts. I'll also keep an eye on any conditions reports that people post up. Also looks like I'll be sharpening up the axes and crampons

Here's hoping for a good weekend.
Take care and stay safe.
Marq
