Pen y Fan is Bannau Brycheiniog’s superstar. As the loftiest point in Southern Britain, it's unsurprisingly but deservedly popular. The high point of an elegant, glacier-hewn massif, the play of light and shadow on its layered, uniquely sculpted face is spellbindingly beautiful if you catch it on a good day. It’s perhaps the UK’s finest example of terraced sandstone architecture south of the North West Highlands. A romp along the broad ridges that embrace Cwm Sere provides a relatively quiet way to its apex. This route reveals the iconic northeast face from various vantages and takes in the equally aesthetic wedge of neighbouring Cribyn, the summit of which is a beguiling, airy peak.
