I've begun planning a long walk this summer through the Alps, and I'm trying to find a solution for maps - is there any way to print decent topo maps of Europe - sort of OS maps style services but for Swiss/Italian topo maps? I'm crossing quite a few maps, so buying maps individually is a bit expensive.

Swisstopo is free and worth a look. Comes in web & app versions. Not tried printing but everything else is excellent

I use GaiaGPS and save the maps as PDFs before printing them.

IIRC all of Swiss, French and Spanish official (and highly detailed) maps are available for download completely free of charge, down to the smallest map scales (unlike OS maps). Austria might vary state by state, and no idea about Italy.

It might be in GeoTIFF or a similar GIS file format, though.

Regarding Austria, ÖEAV (AAC) membership used to come with free access to digital AAC maps through a free OutdoorActive Pro licence or a windows app, and AAC maps are pretty good too.
