I am driving N.Wales down to Cardiff on Tuesday to pick up my sister. I can stop for a couple of hours on the way & want to go up Pen Y Fan, simply as it is the highest point in S.Wales & I've not been up it.
So what is the quickest route up/down it? I'm looking for a well marked route so I don't have to bother with route finding.
In reply to Andy Mountains:

Go from the Storey Arms for the shortest route (though you do drop a bit of height before going back up again).

A slighty longer route is from the carpark/toilets at the end of the forest South of the SA. Tis a bit longer but no height loss on the middle.

Either way are Motorway style tracks

In reply to Andy Mountains: If you can navigate the single track roads to the north - there is a car park at SO024247 it's about an hour up to the top from there and a bit quieter.
In reply to Andy Mountains:

Thankyou people. I will get the map out.

In reply to Andy Mountains:

From either Storey Arms or the Car Park / Toilets just after, one could "comfortably" get from there to summit in 45 mins*, and back in maybe 25 mins*.

* Depending on: level of fitness, weight carried in rucksack, how many people there are to get in your way, weather, etc etc.

In reply to Andy Mountains: Andy, don't forget ur waterproofs, rain due Tues. I'd go from the toilet block if ur after the shortest/quickest route. One path all the way so you can't go wrong. Don't make the same mistake as many though, the 1st peak you come to is Corn Du. PyF is the second.

Cheers.

And a word of warning! Don't expect the Storey Arms to be a pub - it isn't any more. We went up from the car park described above and down directly to the SA. On the way down we had been keenly expecting a pint and a pie at the end and were disappointed to find it's an outdoor pursuits centre...

Bit of history: It never was a pub. The original Storey Arms was a few hundred yards away and was demolished in 1924.

Thanks for that I'd always assumed from it's name that it was once a pub. Learn something new every day!
