Next week we are looking to sea kayak Rum and Canna but also fancied throwing in a big hike for fun. The Rum Traverse is the obvious one but we were looking at going from the Bothy at the south side and doing it clockwise instead.

Anything is possible, we know it's doable but would it impact the fun points? I think we get why it's done we way round it is but in our case the starting point is different. Your thoughts thanks.

I don't think the direction matters too much, other than you may not want to do the Askival Pinnacle in descent, but you can take the normal bypass route on the E side instead. That's assuming of course you want to go out to Hallival, rather than returning by Beinn nan Stac, which is a more logical circuit! If you go out to Hallival, you have a choice of returning to the bothy via Bealach an Oir, or else via the Kinloch-Dibidil path.

Hi Mark, thanks for posting. We're not really into ticking lists, summits or feeling like we have to complete something but rather we're just keen on having a great day out. It seems that Askival is the best part of the ridge so it could be that after topping that off the rest of the route could be a bit of a come down so we were chatting about whether it is worth doing the whole lot if a good few miles are trudging back on the coastal path.

Your 2 options for dropping down could be a good call. Thanks.

When last did this. The coast path is good, and the party split and half did each way. Slightly easier N to S.

Walking from the bothy to the north end and traversing back to the bothy would be OK.
