True for me. Many, many years ago I did the 35 mile route. Inevitably hadn't taken training seriously, and suffered so badly, but completed it. Made my realise that as long as you keep putting one foot before the other, it's amazing how long you can keep going.
Did the 55 mile route a couple of years later, still hadn't trained hard enough, but because psychologically I knew I could do it, my memory of it is that it was much easier than the shorter event.
As an aside, during a training event our outdoor activity teacher lost 6 of us, fifteen year olds, overnight on Dartmoor in horrendous weather. We were all fine, just camped in the wrong place. When we eventually met up with him the next day, he hadn't bothered raising an alert or even telling our parents, he just said 'I figured you would turn up eventually'. Current day teachers - how well do you think that would go down now?
