Due to living quite far from anywhere and not always having much time I don't aften get to go walking/hill climbing. I was wondering what (if anything) I could do to improve my hill walking endurance where I live so I'm better at it on the occations I do get to go.

I run a couple of times a week and though maybe this would be the best way to train? If it helps I have a small hill near me (about 100m long, I considered just walking up and down this but it would be very boring and I would look very stupid as it is just pavement).

Thanks

I will second the Prancercise, I started using it a week ago and I am noticeably fitter now.

The most important part is making sure you video yourself and posting it back on here otherwise it just won't work.

I think you might be having your leg pulled....*

*Apologies if you've already realised this and were just joking.
In reply to jack333: I took up running purely to get fit for the hills, and it worked. Try to run 4 times per week and if there aren't any hills then use the 'fartlek' system. Also, walk with a heavy rucksack whenever you can (I walk my dog carrying 5 litres of water).

In reply to JoshOsh: Ye I know, don't worry I'm not that gullible.

In reply to Vanessa Simmons: Thanks, what sort of distance/time and intensity do you recomend? Should I be going for short bursts of speed or longer streches at a lower pace?

In reply to jack333:

Just go running. If you do three decent runs a week, that'll make you fitter than most folk out on the hills. If you like doing short fast runs, do them. If you like long slow runs, do that. Either will work fine.

Step machine in the gym. You can measure performance/progress and simulate hill walking with different programmes. I am much faster uphill for regular training thereon.

I would say cycling as well.

cycling (climbs) will help climbing on the hills

and vice versa.
