I guess this is one for Fawksey...

I'll be going for confined spaces training in the next couple of months: two burning questions - do I get to keep the beard, and, if not, how do I break it to Mrs Y.

In reply to Yrmenlaf: dunno, it maybe if you are doing "rescue". I will almost certainly think youll use Sabre escape sets which means a full face mask requiring a seal to your face. Are you doing full BA (breathing apparatus)

lastly where? Ive my Weslh Mines Rescue training in the middle of next month to re do

In reply to Fawksey:

Not sure, to be honest: I've been invited to a site visit in mid-October which says that "all delegates should have appropriate confined space training"

It'll most probably be at Haughton le Spring in County Durham, mid-September.

In reply to Yrmenlaf: I’d ask the organiser, they may let you keep your beard. Apparently, stubble is stiff enough to break the seal but longer hair is soft enough to flatten and seal. The mask will be under positive pressure so any leaks will be clean air escaping and not unwanted stuff getting in. If you’re only likely to use briefly for emergency escape that shouldn’t be a problem.

In reply to Yrmenlaf:
Sorry, I must correct you, it's not something trivial like the Peaks down south, it's Houghton-le-Spring.

Enjoy the pubs in Durham.
Dun Cow
Half Moon
Shakespear
Yew(?) Tree
Colpitts
That was our pub crawl but also once topped up with a bottle of cider in sitting in cloisters of catherdral to keep us going until the pubs reopened - that was barbarism.

Depends what course he's doing. If it's full BA he'll be doing the various leak and breath-down tests, which rely on getting a decent face seal. Apparently a smear of vaseline on the beard will do the trick...
But as you say, ask the course organiser.

In reply to Yrmenlaf:

Just looked at your profile pic. A bit of trimming round the jawline and under the chin should do the job. See if someone will lend you a mask so you can check for fit.
In reply to Ridge: Its of a bugger but at work we carry ORS Oxygen regeneration sets that are just a nose clamp and a mouth piece. But we never open them and train because it costs a lot of money once theyve been opened to service them again so when we train we use Sabre escape sets.

The BA sets being different altogether. Ive done the courses for confined space entry, offline traverse and rescue at least four times in four years even though the ticket lasts three years! But the Welsh Mines Rescue ticket seems to have cornered the market with the water companies so I have to go do my rescue ticket with them in September.

Your pub crawl missed out the swan and three cigs. I do live here, you know....

Just looked at your profile, maybe you've got a more appropriate use for the catherdral than I did in the distant past.

Closed down (some time over last winter I think)

How could you miss the Vic off that list, though?

Is the Fighting Cocks still there?

In reply to Wingnut:

Sorry, no.

Its apartments now.

In reply to Fawksey: Some escape sets just have a hood don't they? If so should be OK. If he's required to wear a proper mask then unlikely. He'll need to be face fit tested and pretty unlikely to pass
