Hi folks,

Just wondering if any of you have any experience of sailing off the Dalmatian coast around Croatia ? We have done a litle sailing in the Ionian sea off Greece and thoroughly enjoyed it so we are looking for a new destination to try.

I have a couple of questions which the more experienced sailors might be able to answer, firstly, which would be the best port to base ourselves out of ?

Secondly what is the best time of year to go, if we could avoid school holidays that would probably give us better value for money but it really depends on how far into the year the (tourist) sailing season extends? We have a tame licensed skipper and a couple of willing deckhands who can just about tie a clove hitch so would be looking to charter a fairly small bare boat (32ft ish).

Finally if anyone has knows any charter companies that they would recommend or avoid like the plague that would be really helpful!

Any useful information about sailing in this area would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

GS

A couple of years ago we chartered from Trogir, a simple bus ride from Split airport. Plenty to do around there, lots of little ports, even some climbing if you plan ahead, we had a good time. We did a week sailing out and back, there are plenty of routes you can do round the islands there. We tended to alternate, one night in port and one night out. There were a few charter companies there so you can shop around, they are all online. It gets quieter (and much cheaper!) out of peak season but that is no bad thing, most of the ports round there were real places with locals so not everything shuts down out of summer holidays. It's mainly a question of getting the weather so don't leave it too late in the year.
