Fed EX email virus?

I had an odd email yesterday "World Wide Express mail" a parcel delivery from Fed Ex (legitimate firm) tracking numbers etc. They said they had tried to deliver a parcel but I wasn't in but asked to click on the parcel receipt button (in the email) to get a receipt to take to my post office to collect. I smell a rat.
It is possible that someone has sent me a parcel from abroad so....
1. I thought why did I not get a note through the door?
2. I went on to the main Fedex website and put in the tracking numbers quoted, they didn't work.
3. my virus scanner detected no virus though (and it is updated)
So is it or isn't it?

In reply to Duncan Bourne:

sounds suspicious to me.

your virus scanner won't detect a virus because until you click on the link there isn't one.

if the tracking number doesn't work on fedex's site i'd say don't click on the button.

In reply to Duncan Bourne:

we had one, deleted it as a scam, can't remember what was wrong with it but we never use their link if it's not 100%
In reply to Duncan Bourne:

It's a phishing scam, I've had one as well. If you hover your mouse over the link in the email (Don't click it!!) then you'll see the real website address that will be similar to FedEx's. Probably there's a automatic download on there which will log web activity and keystrokes so if you visit your bank's website to check your account then the scammers will be able to grab your username and password.

Sending viruses these days is old hat, there's no money to be made. Things have moved on and most attacks are best described as social engineering: "Your bank details need updating/confirming"; "There's been unusual activity on your account, please confirm your details" That sort of thing.

Mark it as spam and move on.

In reply to Duncan Bourne: Yeh I had one of these. I also went on to the offical Fed Ex site and checked it. I then contacted Fed Ex and they were very interested in the email and asked me to forawrd it on to them.

It's a scam. I also received the mail and, like a fool, I clicked on the link. Somewhere in the world, a kitten died.

In reply to Duncan Bourne: It is a phishing scam. They are after your details. There is nothing more sinister from a software point of view than good old human fallibility.

In reply to Duncan Bourne:

How did FedEx get your email address? That's not usually on the delivery information, is it?

A supplier would have it, if it was a legit delivery, but FedEx wouldn't.

Also, have a look at the email headers.

You are probably only seeing parts of the email headers, as most email clients are configured be default to show a Reply-To address, a Subject, and a Time / Date

You may find that the Recipient address is something random, or non-disclosed - particularly if you have a catchall address. And the Sender address will almost certainly be something random in China, or Russia, or some yahoo address, and I doubt that FedEx use random addresses to send emails out.

So, it's a scam

You should be able to add extra headings / topics in your mail client that make spam even more clearly identifiable, but the default headings are often completely shit at revealing the sort of stuff that makes it blatant that it's not from whom it purports to be from.

Be afraid, be very afraid. I had a similar one last year (from dhl i think) when, probably not by coincidence, i was expecting a delivery. I foolishly opened it ( luckily on a barely used but fully protected laptop) and it took me £90 to get the laptop working having lost all the old data.

There are already Mac-targetting trojans out there, and there will only be more as the platform becomes more popular. Don't assume you're safe!

Don't worry I have Anti-virus software on it too

In reply to Duncan Bourne: currently I'd like to give FedEX a virus for completely screwing up a delivery on Friday and leaving me to go on a wild goose chase to try and find it (it's still missing!) If anyone would like to work out how I can get revenge please let me know! !!! Co:
