Hi everyone

My cat is very sick. He has been vomiting blood and passed melena once and was found collapsed when I got home yesterday afternoon. He is currently at the Glasgow Vet School on a fluid drip awaiting more tests and may require a blood transfusion (he is very anaemic).

The current potential diagnosis is a gastric cancer of some sort (lymphoma or adenocarcinoma). I'm trying to stay positive so I wondered if anyone out there knows anything about the prognosis for therapy (surgery and chemo) or has had a cat that has undergone chemo and knows what is to come. I've had a quick google and from what I can see, life expectancy is between 2 months and 2 years. Does anyone know how well such therapy is tolerated? Does anyone know if it will just prolong suffering (I thought he was going to die in my car/overnight, but he is a fighter and has perked up a little enough for more investigations).

Thank you (sitting waiting by my phone for news)

Poor little chap. I don't know anything about his illness, but I do know how upset I'd feel if it was our cat. Best of luck.

In reply to lynda: Hi Jon, thanks for your post.

Currently he has had quite a few tests which have shown no signs of tumour (whihc is promising). This means we still don't know what is causing the bleeding. The next step is an endoscopy, but we have to wait for either a suitable blood donor to come forward or for him to make enough blood to cope with the anaesthetic.

Does anyone have an indoor cat or knows of anyone with an indoor cat (preferably in the Glasgow area) who might be willing to allow their cat to be a blood donor? Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but as it happens my cat has a rare blood group (B) which is proving difficult to find a donor.
