Anybody got any ideas as to where I can pick up any OCR software that will convert text to Excel.

Cheers.

Is this data you are importing, or text, or Excel Formulae?

I'd start by looking at the formats that Excel can import, first...

The most basic way of importing data into a spreadsheet is Comma Separated text...

I've got pages of numbers that I'd like to scan and then import into a spreadsheet.....any thoughts.

I thought I'd be able to get an OCR enging that would do the trick.

In reply to Removed User:

That'll be Comma Separated format then

ie

1,7,34,42

etc will put each number in a separate cell. It needs to be plain, ASCII, text

You can probably get away with converting to just plain text, and tell Excel to use spaces as separators...

So I'd imagine that the OCR saoftware that came with the scanner will do that for you...

If not, then straight into Word, and export it from Word either straight into Excel, or save it as a comma separated file from within Word, maybe with a bit of playing around first...

Cheers, I'll try the file-import function on excel on Monday, just got Works on the home PC and it doesn't do the job.

Not used Works for years... but it might just be a question of changing the file extention to .csv if you currently have it with .txt

You can just create a file in notepad with some numbers in, and save it as test.csv and see what happens

I've just tried the above with the OpenOffice spreadsheet, and it gives you a choice of coosing which you want to use as a separator, the default being a comma, but a space was another option

You've not come across anyone backwards engineering an Xsane driver for Canons new Lide scanners? numbnuts here goes out and buys a new scanner without checking sane.org for support first

In reply to Dominion:

Actually f*ck it canon refuses to release it's source and will not develop anything for GNU so i've got a nice new laptop riser instead of a scanner or maybe a doorstop or coffee mat.

And also a pledge never to buy anything of canon ever ever again

Hey, if it does not work with your system and there are no drivers for it then send it back as of not being of merchantable quality.

What's the connection for that scanner? USB?

I see Mac OS 9 etc are supported, as well as Mac OSX

What about running the Canon Windows software under Wine?

Or a powerpc emulator? (although I doubt that pearpc will allow you to do that yet - http://pearpc.sourceforge.net )

SheepShaver (I kid you not) apparrently runs MAC OS 7.5.2 through to 9.0.4

I thought you had a Mac anyway?

I went for a complete linux home and am feeling a little daft for it. it occured to me about running wine when i took the thing back...(i didn't think they'd take stuff like scanners and the like back but they were really nice about it) and exchanged it for an epson.

I saw an article about pearpc in Lformat the other week but i've still not got around to reading it yet...i think i need more fibre in my diet

In reply to sutty:

They took it back even though everyhitng had been opoened and

Good for you. if it does not work and you explain your problem and want another one they will usually be helpful.

The worst thing that can happen when you want do do something is for them to say no. Always worth asking the question.

pearpc looks interesting, but you'd need a copy of Mac OS x anyway.

It attempts to emulate the hardware of a Mac on an x86 architecture, so allowing you to install OS X and run it...

Only at a fairly low level though, at the moment, and slowly...

Likely to be mostly used for developers who don't have Mac hardware - although I suspect the new Mac Mini will put both a copy of OS X and Mac hardware in a few more people's hands.

Is that the one thats the size of an external cd drive?

 Dominion 17 Jan 2005
In reply to BHB delete me posts28134:

Yep

If it was £250 including VAT I'd be interested, but at £339 it would need a G5 CPU
BHB xping it up 17 Jan 2005
In reply to Dominion:

Thats quite steep when you bear in mind you can pick up a dual Power G4 for about the same money
