Forget Ape Index, its been done to death. I've covered Apex index as well. Thing with these is, they're both ratios to other body parts. This time I've gone purist. Its all about length. Size matters!

How long is your arm?

If you press your finger behind ythe top of your shoulder, you'll feel the sharp boney point of the scapula:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scapula

Measure in cm form this point to the tip of your middle finger, with your arm stretched out in front. Keep the tape measure tight, no slacking!

HD - 85cm.

In reply to hugedyno:

Approx 32 1/4 inches; dunno what that translates into metrics.
 Alex Roddie 05 Sep 2007
In reply to hugedyno:
80cm
But then again, I am a shortarse.

In reply to hugedyno:

Is there a way I can measure this without any measuring instruments? Something like how long it takes an average squirrel to forage ten acorns from my armpit to a nest in my palm.
 Alex Roddie 05 Sep 2007
In reply to quadmyre: Surely it would be easier to find a tape measure??? =P

In reply to Alex Roddie: what if you don't have one? (in the office)

In reply to hugedyno:

But you do have a Squirrel handy.

78cm.
 Justin T 05 Sep 2007
In reply to hugedyno:

About 82cm. Measuring involved a bit of cable, a sheet of A4, wikipedia and calc...

In reply to hugedyno:

77cm. Now I feel inadequate
 Alex Roddie 05 Sep 2007
In reply to jeni222uk:
It's all right, people who are gangly in the arm department may be compensating for inadequacies elsewhere.
 jeni222uk 05 Sep 2007
In reply to Alex Roddie:

That's very true. And I do have extremely long lower limbs.

82 cm.

Need a big sample group to work out what 'average' is , though . Then we can see if its directly proportional to climbing ability/sexual prowess etc.

In reply to hugedyno: by the sharp bony bit, bit do you mean where the clavicle joins on the top of the shoulder?

if so left 80 cm, right 82 cm?????
this might be due to broken bones etc
ant one else odd length arms?
 jeni222uk 05 Sep 2007
In reply to gear boy:

Yeah - left arm's 75cm, right is 77cm. It's pretty common for right legs to be a couple of cms longer than left legs possibly due to foetal positioning during development. Hadn't thought about it with arms though, although I guess it makes sense...
 Mystery Toad 05 Sep 2007
In reply to hugedyno:

"Sexual prowess"?
erm.....

oooooo k.
Shouldn't you have everyone measure their left arm then?

ew.

About the same for both, 77-78cm.

In reply to sarah79: < I am the gangly queen> Hmm, I'll see your ABBA and raise you The Bee-gees

I see the line in the Wharncliffe sun
Feel you spot me as I stretch again
And the moment when the hold’s too far for me
You catch me in your arms again

Then you make the reach with such consummate ease
See you swarm to the jug oh so easily
And its me who needs to know

Chorus:
How long is your arm? (how long is, long is your arm)
I really need to grow
Cause my ape-index is minus two
Letting me down
When your arms are like chimpanzees
You’re so strong and I’m so weak

How I envy you
You’re 6 foot 4 from head to sole
I’m 5ft 5 even on my tiptoed feet
Feel such a failure when I fall
And though you may not shrink
Have a care for me
As I try and I try
But fail dismally
And its me who needs to grow

How long is your arm....

Ha ha! 65cm both sides. Does that make me really intelligent, i.e. the opposite of the 'missing link'?

Not if you're 4' 2", covered in orange hair and play 'first person shooter' with your left foot.

I can't seem to find the sharp boney point of my scapula, just some rather indisticnt bony lumps. Am I Quasimodo, or is there a Find your Scapula for Dummies (other than the Wikipedia one) out there?

In reply to hugedyno: 75cm. And I'm 6'1" so it makes me akin to a T-rex.
 MattOwen 06 Sep 2007
In reply to hugedyno:

87 cm.

So what does that mean?
I'm 6', or 6'1" on a good day...

In reply to hugedyno:

Fortunately, slightly longer than the list of jobs I'm working through!

In reply to TRNovice:

Put your fingertips on the top of your shoulder.

Slide them laterally, (round the side of the deltoid) until your pinkie is facing down and your index finger is level with the top of your shoulder.

Keeping your hand in this position, slide your hand around the back, slowly.

If you keep your index finger pressed firmly in (for fat shoulders), you should contact the boney point within a couple of cm, or so.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, go see a Vet. ;-P
