Has anyone done this? I'm looking in to it, may be useful in future etc. what does it involve? How often do you have to be reaccredited?

In reply to Brendan H:
It involves being dunked into a swimming pool in a plastic fake helicopter simulator, turned upside down and having to make an escape while wearing lifejacket and rebreather type kit.
All under supervision of Divers in the water.

You can do it in a few places, Falck Nutec, HOTA, RGIT Altens, Fleetwood etc.

Refresh every 4 years.

Australia? Scrap all the above, you may have different regs / requirements

In reply to Brendan H: Hmm, and how does it rate out of ten on the scary sh1t scale?

In reply to Brendan H:

about 1

That also depends if you are scared of water / immersion.
I actually find it a quite good fun day out, especially when someone else is paying for it

I have seen someone panic (I think they lost hold of their seat belt buckle) and have to be dragged out of the simulator into the pool by the divers (after kicking the instructor in the face and dislodging her mask...) but for me it's a good bit of fun.

What ABZmed said. Bah - have to do this in September for the 5th time now after somehow ending up working offshore for 16 years. Just a boring inconvenience now although the first time is quite exciting and good fun.

Not scary at all really, you'll probably find you are a little apprehensive but resuce divers are in the pool in close proximity in case anything goes wrong.

In reply to mudmonkey5: Awesome stuff, il have to look in to it a bit more, there's a few things I'm interested in that require it.
Any other helicopter related training youd recomend?

In reply to Brendan H:

abzmed mentions pretty much all the places in the UK you can do it - reasonable geographical spread over UK. The ones in Aberdeen run courses more frequently, Maersk is cheapest.

Not sure what you are looking to get in to - only know the stuff for working offshore. If that is your aim then only the minimum BOSIET is generally required to get a start and your employer will probably provide any further training required
