I was nearly put off whisky for life after buying a bottle of Tesco's own label Islay Single Malt...foul stuff !

However,I bought a bottle of Dundalgan Irish whisky fron Lidl at the W/E and it's lovely.

I rather like Irish whiskey anyway...Jamesons, Bush Mills etc.

I'm not a whiskey buff but the run of the mill Irish whiskies
just seem smoother than their Scottish counterparts.

In reply to Jonno:

Probably the extra distillation that does it.

In reply to Jonno: Try some Southern Comfort, you might like it!

Cheers,

A couple of years ago this was a very tasty, non-chill-filtered Bowmore 12 yo, has it changed now?

Dunno...perhaps it's a personal taste thing. Never did like Lapthroig either.

Sainsbury's own Irish Single Malt used to be very nice, great value for money. (I haven't had any for a while.)

It seems likely the bottle you bought in Lidl is from the same distillery:

When was that? Because these people would say that it was personal taste.

As I'm a cheap skate, every month, I go round the supermarkets looking at the specials they have on. There are so many good malts out there, it would be rude not to. The specials are only a few quid more than the own brands anyway. Adds some excitement and adventure to my drinking career.

Would you like to know why they distill whiskey three times in ireland?

Dont forget Jonno, those Irish blends can be really improved with just a dash of Coke or Dr peppers

In reply to Tim Gardener:

As already stated, in the 'run of the mill' department, Irish whiskey is a better bet than a sub 10 quid Scottish whisky.

In my humble opinion.
In reply to Jonno:

Most Islay whiskys can be an acquired taste - think it's the iodine form seaweed - well worth acquiring though in my opinion. If you want something smoother go for speyside or lowland or even Bunnahabhain.

I too was disappointed with Tescos Islay malt two years ago. Asda has always suited me, and the Black Bottle blend they sometimes have is better than a lot of the circa £20 whiskys, pity they do not have it very often.

In reply to Jonno: Just seen your post. The Irish Tyreconnel (sp) is by far the best whisky I've ever tasted.
Ricky 26 Mar 2007
In reply to sutty:

Totally agree. Black Bottle is a top blend. I am an Islay malt man with Lagavulin being my favourite with Ardbeg close behind. Black Bottle is a blend of all seven islay malts which varies from year to year depending on various factors.
I understand the comments above, partcularly regarding Laphroig which is a particularly strong flavoured malt in common to a degree with all Islay malts (along with Talisker from Skye).
They ARE an acquired taste though & to the above co-respondents, they are well worth persevering with, but are definitely NOT for slugging !!

If by slugging you mean sharing a bottle into a few large glasses and handing them out to a couple of mates to slowly finish over an evening then I disagree with you completely - Laphroaig is the perfect whisky for this, as long as you enjoy the taste of it... Which I do, massively.

In reply to simon clarke:
If you like Tyrconnell, you should definitely check out Sainsbury's own brand Irish single malt.

(Though apparently most of the other supermarket own-brand Irish whiskey's also come from the same distillery as Tyrconnell - check out the link I posted before.)
