submitting to the assembled mega-knowledge of UKC...

I'm on a Mac Powerbook with OSX 10.4.8, I want to upload files to an FTP server but when I try to do this I just get a message saying the server "cannot be modified". Get Info for the server says I "can only read"

I can download files from the same server with no problems

A friend with a PC can upload with no problems

How can I get my Mac to upload? Is there something in System Preferences I need to set?

Thanks
Ian

In reply to Ian Hill: I usually use 'Fetch' for moving files around, its free for a trial period & fairly cheap if you decide to buy.

In reply to Ian Hill:

I've had the same problem.

This article here suggests that Finder isn't too hot at ftp and that you should use a 3rd party app.

In reply to Ian Hill:

FireFTP on Firefox (a simple plugin) is very easy to use too.

In reply to Ian Hill:

Apple, for reasons best known to themselves, chose to make finder ftp access read only. I suggest using a third party utility, cyberduck is always highly recommended for ftping.

If you need to integrate ftp within finder, for use with other apps or whatever, take a look at macfuse, which adds readwrite ftp access and a whole load of other filesystems/protocols.
In reply to Ian Hill:

Have a wee look on SourceFourge.net for FTP apps. I've downloaded a couple of decent ones off there.

thanks all, so it's one of those unusual Mac problems, you'd think they'd be really into file sharing

right off to search for 3rd party FTP software

best free software?

downloaded MacFuse and installed the package and restarted as they say but still can't upload through Finder...is there something else I need to do to get MacFuse to work?

Seem to remember using BBEdit to upload - it's a fantastic program for all sorts of things. Presumably one could use the UNIX terminal ...

Recently just used the finder without problems (wonder why?)

In reply to Ian Hill:

Macfuse operates with a kind of plugin system. You install Macfuse and then install plugins for the protocols you want. I may have mislead you slightly with the 'works with finder' bit. It does mount external filesystems as local folders, which means you can interact with them through finder (or any other app) but it won't add the option to 'connect to server' through the finder menu as this is a closed system. The actual mounting of the remote filesystem is done through the terminal, though it can then be ejected through the finder.

If you just want to move a few files around, an external app would be less hassle. Cyberduck is free, open source and often recommended for ftping.

In reply to Ian Hill:

Try 'use passive ftp mode' in system prefs (network). This has scuppered many of my file transfers.
Is the Firewall on? If so you'll have to manually turn on ftp access in the firewall section of system prefs (sharing).

I can upload no probs with passive mode and access through firewall enabled.

Otherwise go for a third party as suggested above... some very good options there.

Best of luck

Ben
