Following a democratic debate on the pages of UK climbing, Simon Lee decides to put an end to the matter by dumping the rock in the open cesspit known as Lawrencefield pool.

He takes the chockstone to the centre of the pool in a boat, and then drops the rock over the side into the pool.

Question is, what happens to the water level in the pool when the rock is dropped into the water?
Does it
a) drop
b) rise
c) stay the same?

Think about it, the answer is not what you might expect!

Level drops.

In reply to Alex Pryor:

I think I agree with Stefan.

Chockstone in water displaces volume of chockstone
Chockstone in boat displaces volume of water of equivalent mass to chocktone. Water being less dense than gritstone, this is a greater volume???

In reply to Alex Pryor:
Doesn't it stay the same, till he gets the boat out of the water, then it ends up higher in relation to it's original level.
In reply to Alex Pryor:

The water would go way down because this famed piece of rock is so hot that a lot of the water would evaporate. The water would go down even further once people had heard about this travesty, with all the hot air that would then be expended.

In reply to Mike C:

It would stay the same because the reduction of volume displced by the boat would equal displacement of the chockstone. However the weight of all the guilt would actually make the boat sit lower in the water after dumping the chockstone

And then the lady of the lake shall pass the stone to one who shall return it to its rightful home

In reply to Alex Pryor:

But the water isn't that deep, so why wouldn't he just wade out?

Or throw the rock from the side of the pool?

Rather than go to all the trouble of carrying a boat all that way?

It's not like he could really use it as training for climbing is it???

Luv Barra! xx
In reply to Graham Taylor:

Actually, the physics wouldn't be quite so simple, because at the same time as all the hot air there would be gallons of tears from the traditionalists.

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

the level would go up as simon lee would add to the general level of wetness of the place. Then again, after he's dropped the rock over, some traditionalists might start calling him names and he'd throw his toys out of the boat. If any of these landed on land, rather than in the water the level would go down as the total displacement of things floating on the water would be reduced.

Unfortunately Stefan got the answer right straight away (had you already heard it, or are you a fast thinker?), as confirmed by Notfozzz.

When in the boat, the rock displaces the equivalent MASS of water, but when it's in the pool, it displaces its VOLUME of water. As the rock is denser than water, the equivalent mass of water is greater than the equivalent volume.

QED

(What happens later when the Simon Lee joins the rock in the water is a different story)
In reply to pete theobald:

In other words, it would be complete chaos, with the water level going up and down as the argument raged.

In reply to Alex Pryor:
But would the banner on his boat also affect the diplacement.
Banner reading 'look at me look at me'?

It's a good job it was only a chockstone could you imagine the fuss if it were a bolt!!!!

In reply to Alex Pryor:
I take exception to the word "cesspit".

The pool contains several large fish of around 12inches long and I have actually seen someone fishing it. A hobby I think the "chockstone bandit" should turn to.

When i saw a bloke fishing in it, he said he got the disbelieving look all the time, he the proceeded to catch a few
 Dominion 04 Nov 2004
In reply to Graham Taylor:

Possibly the fish were looking for easy way to get out of the water, 'cos people keep boating out to the middle and dropping chockstones on their head in order to prove a point of physics?

In reply to Gordon Stainforth:

The hot air coming from the traditionalists and simon lee may well cause the temperature to rise and the watr to expand. It would be difficult to determine whether this would see a net rise or fall in the level. Of course, if Simon where to put the rock in the water and get it wet, then take it home to his mantelpiece, he would be taking water with him and the level would drop. Every time he changed his mind the level would change. The level could also be increased by extra liquid falling in the water from all the onlokers pissing in the wind
