So now we are supposed to sympathise with people who turn perfectly pleasant public open spaces into rubbish tips. Do they even pay any taxes?

In reply to Richard Horn: "This does not mean forcing Travellers into bricks and mortar, says Andrew Ryder; it means politically enabling them to live their lives and protect their culture."

So the exact opposite of what they did with all those New Age travellers who now run coffe shops in Hebden Bridge and Blaenau Beyond!

In reply to Ron Manager:

But surely, by definition a Traveller moves around, so if you own land and stay on it all the time you're not a traveller any more?

Similarly if the council provides land, due to your 'Travelling Culture' you wouldn't stay on it for long enough for your children to become integrated into the local school, so the responsible action, for people who want to live as travellers would be to make themselves skilled in Home Schooling so that their children receive a consistant and undisturbed education, whereever they are located, and when travelling between locations as well.

It would also be a responsible action to leave the place you 'land' on for a while, between travelling as clean and tidy as when you arrived.

In reply to Richard Horn:
They deserve no sympathy. They ruin perfectly good land, leaving rubbish behind, steal from the locals and moan that they cant stay anywhere when they get kicked out.

In reply to Richard Horn:
If they are Irish why do they have a right ot be supported by the British taxpayer ?
OP Richard Horn 28 Oct 2004
In reply to Postmanpat:

I dont see that they should. What rattles me is the attitude of the BBC reporting this story in the context of 'poor little victims', whereas they if their children are not getting a stable education, the BBC report should be laying into the parents of these children for not allowing them to attend a single school.

In reply to Richard Horn:
I heard some defender of Traveller's rights being interviewed by Peter Allen " (sp?) on 5 Live last week . He admitted that he had a Traveller's encampment near his house and then proceeded to conduct the most un PC interview I've ever heard . "It's not just some camps that are dirty , ALL the camps I've been to are dirty ", "Why are travellers a 'race' ? Aren't they just drop outs ? " etc etc .Very amusing .

In reply to Postmanpat:
Why do the DSS never check up on them working, they nearly all do some sort of work as well as claiming dole.

They are EU citizens and so are we (unless you're a UKIP supporter!)

In reply to Ronald Manager:
So I can drive my campavan around Europe picking up benefits as I go ? Helluva deal .
Tom Fuller 28 Oct 2004
In reply to Postmanpat: Yeah, but you will still need to get your little black cat innoculated and data tagged.
 Postmanpat 28 Oct 2004
In reply to Tom Fuller:

Slugain Howff 28 Oct 2004
In reply to Richard Horn:

So I take it pikey's are bad things then who should be made to conform.
OP Richard Horn 28 Oct 2004
In reply to Slugain Howff:

No I am in fact a believer in individuality, but not at the financial expense of others, and they certainly shouldnt moan when difficulties arise (such as child education) as a direct result in their choice of lifestyle. The BBC shouldnt humour their whinging either.
