R.I.P Martin, known to many as the proprietor of Shepards Cafe.

Thoughts and condolences to your family and friends!

What a pity. The place won't be the same without him.

In reply to butteredfrog: Sad news. Toppest of top blokes for getting Shepherd's open quite early in the F&M outbreak in 2001.

In reply to butteredfrog: I am gutted to hear that, Martin was one of the true characters of Borrowdale life.
Deepest condolences to his family, he will be much missed by all.
In reply to butteredfrog:

I never knew him to go climbing but the man was integral to many peoples experience of Shephards and other Borrowdale crags, a day on the crags wouldn't be complete without at least one visit to his Cafe for the fantastic location the, extremely good value food but mainly for the incredibly entertaining banter.

I know he will be missed by many. I can't imagine many other business proprieters would have put up with years of climbers clogging up their small car park for hours while on the crag.

Gutted. Top man, and a friend to the climbing community. Borrowdale won't be the same!

In reply to butteredfrog: That's really sad. He was always really friendly when I called in for brew.

In reply to butteredfrog:

That is a shame indeed. As said, kept us climbing during F&M, was always a friend to climbers, some of the best coffee and cake around and never tried to rip us off.
In reply to butteredfrog:

When it first opened, his rock buns were the stuff of legends. The easiest way to persuade my 10 year old lad to come climbing was to bribe him with a visit to the caff afterwards.
In reply to Lord of Starkness:
....and sometimes it was a problem getting my son past the caff door on the way to the crag!
