I've recently bought myself a shiney new MP3 / MP4 player which can play videos for when I'm traveling / offshore. I'm looking for a bit of software that will let me rip some of my DVDs I've got at home so that I can put them onto my MP3 player and watch them when I'm away.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a good bit of software for this? Preferable freeware, etc. so that I don't have to pay for it but am also open to suggestions of good software that you have to buy if that turns out to be the best option.

All suggestions (well serious ones anyway!) gladly received. Unfortunately I'm working nightshift at the moment so won't be able to check back until tonight.

I use this

Not freeware but wasn't too expensive, and it works well.

Any one else out there got any suggestions?

I use handbrake. It has Mac, Windows and linux versions although the Linux version is command line only.

There are presents for certain popular media devices.

In reply to Craig McDonald: rip the disc with dvd decrypter then use Win avi to compress & re encode to a suitable format.

if your new to this kind of thing google doom9 there will be pleanty of how too's and what to use.

the above is how i would do it if i needed to do something like you want to.

In reply to everyone: Cheers folks, a few options for me to try there. I'll have a play with it when I get home next week and hopefully find something that works for me.
In reply to Dave80:

Another one to try is aimersoft DVD ripper
http://www.aimersoft.net/

Costs £20 and can convert DVDs into just about every single type of file possible.
