i bought a new headset, the sound is fine but when i try use my microphone it doesnt work, i tried to record but it is recording the sounds off my computer and not my voice. i can hear msn etc beeping! please help.

Assuming you've got the mic plugged into the correct socket and you're running WinXP:

Right click the volume control in your SysTray, "Adjust Audio Properties", "Audio" tab and then "Volume" in the Sound Recording section. You'll prob find that no input source is selected or the record volume is at zero.

In reply to philo: hey, I have this problem every now and then the following instructions im gonna give yuo wont fix it permantly (well they dont for me) so keep them somewhere. Firstly I assume you are running on Windows.

From what your post first said I believe you are recording What U Hear which is way it only records msn beeps and such.

Try this:

1) Click on start, then control pannel

2) If it says "Pick a category" at the top then click on "Switch to classic view" Down the left hand side. If not then continue onto the next step.

3) Click on Sounds & Audio devices which has an icon of a speaker.

4) A window should pop up. Click on the Voice tab along the top.

5) Click on the second volume button NOT the one below a speaker icon. The one below a microphone icon.

6) If your computer has a microphone socket in the front and it is plugged into this then tick the Microphone Box. If your computer has a microphone socket in the front but the microphone is in the back tick the box Rear Microphone. If your computer has only one microphone socket in the front or back tick the box Microphone.

7) Whack the volume sliders for all the microphones, line ins etc to the top just to be safe.

8) Exit the recording control window and click ok on the dialouge box.

Hope this helps. And hope your microphone wasnt just plugged in in the wrong place otherwise i have wasted 2mins of my life!!

speak louder, apparantly your voice is lower than the sound of your PC.

Double click the speaker / sound icon in your system tray, or right-click it and got to properties.

Mute everything except mic and VOl and pcm

Particularly mute the cd player. On laptops these put a huge amount of dirty noise though the sound output. Only un-mute cd when actually playing an audio cd (ie an actual audio cd, not a data cd with mp3s on it)

You should be able to tick an Advanced tab, or something that allows you to select the Recording Source. It will probably (from what you are describing) be set to the main volume or something. Set it to Mic.

Your Mileage may vary on this. The above works fine on Win98 etc.
