Whilst playing on the rocks just below the summit of Glyder Fach last weekend, to my surprise a a squirrel ran out from between the rocks and then scurried away again. I was genuinely dumbfounded! has anybody else sighted this squirrel? where does it get its nuts?

In reply to CGlennie: A mate saw one on top of Fan y Big in the beacons the other day. Not sure what is going on with the little buggers but there seems to be a hell of a lot of them squashed on the roads over the past couple of weeks

In reply to spearing05:

Seems to be a trend in mammalian summit bagging.

In reply to CGlennie:

We once hit one on the road from Penmachno to Ffestiniog on open moorland that must have been five miles from the nearest tree. It was running along the road and made a suicidal dash under the wheels of our car as we approached. Maybe it had some kind of disorientating illness?

In reply to spearing05: You are not wrong. Instead of The Birds, it looks like it's to be The Squirrels. Get your Zombie Apocalypse kits ready. You heard it here first.

In reply to CGlennie:

I'm guessing that as other plants haven't done too well this year, trees aren't nutting (well I couldn't use fruiting) as much as previous years, and they are out looking for other goodies further afield? They are certainly very active at the moment - I had a few suicidal squirrels try to run under my mtb tyres yesterday

In reply to balmybaldwin: Nutting, what a brilliant term. what confused me the most is the environment this squirrel is living in. its literately just rocks up there. I believe it was a Gray squirrel.

In reply to CGlennie: there are mice on top of Tryfan, so there must be something edible up there, even if it's just sandwiches...

Bin raiders.
In reply to CGlennie: Last week I was walking on the Mynydd Du with my son when we were somewhat surprised to come across a Grey Squirrel on Fan Hir, miles from the nearest tree!

No idea what he was doing there but I wonder if it is young squirrels being turfed out of their parents' territories and having to go elsewhere?

I saw a squirrely on portland a long way from any trees and when it saw me it scampered off down the cliff!

"Squirrel on top of Glyder Fach"

Yeah but what's it ever done on grit?

In reply to CGlennie: No, but summited the Buchaille a few winters ago in the dark and as we sat to eat our sandwiches a little mouse ran out from inbetween some of the rocks and snow, as bold as brass, snaffling the crumbs. (Temperature was waaaay below zero.)

In reply to CGlennie: I saw a squirrel - grey- posing on top of a trig point on a fell high above Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire on Tuesday. It was back to the wind and again a long way from any trees - I took pics cos it was such a weird sight - I thought it was a bird at first - must get pic out of camera...
