as title suggests we are moving to Swindon, which are the best bits of town to live in?

cheers
In reply to thebigdon: If you can't live in Old Town, then I would look elsewhere.

Of course budget and availability of suitable housing will play their part, but even so; if I had to live there again it'd be Old Town or one of the towns around Swindon rather than elsewhere in Swindon.

In reply to thebigdon:
Swindon isn't a brilliant place to live although it does have fairly good amenities and is quite good as a cyclist because the town planners have done a good job of segregating you from the worst of the traffic.
The nicest bit is probably old town although I wouldn't say it was leagues better than a lot of other bits. General rules of thumb for living in Swindon:
- like Ali G's Berkshire; the Westside is the best side, east Swindon is bloody awful.
- don't live in any area of Swindon starting with P, I'm not joking they are all bloody dire.
-don't live in Rodbourne if you want to park a car, or leave the house when the sales are on.

In reply to thebigdon: Old Town area is THE only nice area of Swindon, South of Bath Road is the best bit, the village of Wroughton, just south of Old Town is also very nice.

Old Town defo. Loads of curry houses and some decent bars. Leafy streets and less chavs than new town.

fond memories...well maybe not that many

cheers

In reply to thebigdon: I've lived in Lower Stratton (on the Oxford side of Swindon)since I moved here in '79. Handy enough for everything without being in the middle, but then Swindon isn't that big anyway.

Depends on what you want really; young and looking for nightlife, older with kids and looking for good schools?

My kids were reasonably happy living here 'til they moved away for their jobs.

Really there's only a couple of places I'd try to avoid living in. Any of the outlying places (Wroughton, Wootton Bassett, Highworth) are worth a look if you want a villagy sort of place.

Happy to offer an opinion about anywhere if you want to drop me a line.

As Mike say,s depends on your situation re partner, kids etc. Highworth has a bit of a rural feel but has most basic facilities and is only 10 minutes drive from outer Swindon.
