Why are most tents coloured green or a light brown? I know that there is the odd orange one about but most are green. In days past they were mostly orange, blue and so on… Why Green or Brown?

In reply to Richard Smith: to blend in to the enviorment and not to be notices as much when wild camping etc as a bright orange tent can be spotted on a clear day, very easly where as a green/brown one will be harded. with montian exped tents its the other way around you see lots of orange/yellow tents but not many white ones this is to allow you to find your tent nice and easly

In reply to RhysB: I did think the environment would have something to do with it but I thought I would ask the question. I do miss driving down the A5 in the Ogwen and spotting Williams Farm campsite with lots of orange tents in it. I have a picture in my gallery of the farm from the 70’s; the only thing green in the picture is the Army truck in the background... plus one blue tent.

In reply to Richard Smith: Can you remember those bright orange / yellow cagools from the 80's? I think there was once a time when being well visible was the in thing!
OP Richard Smith 07 Dec 2005
In reply to Jon Dittman: Oh yes I remember them, it was to with being spotted should you have a problem on the hill.

In reply to Richard Smith:

my goretex is bright yellow/orange which I've felt happier about when I've been wandering in the hills on my own. My tent is darkish red which appealed to me 'cause it's a less 'usual' colour than most people's Voyagers. But then, i'm female and so colour is everything
In reply to CJD:

Bright clothes look far better in photos than sombre tones. Especially in snow scenes. Bugger earthy browns and khakis.

In reply to I am the God of Strathyre:

guidebook writers always tell people to wear bright colours for pictures don't they? i have to agree that the current fashion for wearing all black doesn't make for the greatest images.

In reply to malk:

what if that's all you've got and you can't afford to buy another one?
 malk 07 Dec 2005
In reply to CJD:

thats ok then, just keep to the campsites

i disagree, unnatural colors draw the eye away from the subject

In reply to malk:

oh, and my thoughts about the 'all black' thing is just because sometimes it causes people to blend into the rock a bit *too* well.
 malk 07 Dec 2005
In reply to CJD:

with rock climbing photos the subject is the often the climber, so colors contrasting to the rock can only be good, but with landscapes, an orange tent can ruin a picture imo

In reply to malk:

I can see where you're coming from, definitely.

In reply to CJD: Pink tents are good for Ladies... and for those who belong to the mincing squad and sing “ Don’t Sergeant Major me 234 scratch your eyes out silly bitch…”

In reply to Richard Smith: I don't know why, but I've managed to find myself a nice orange one.
 Ben C 07 Dec 2005
In reply to Richard Smith: my tents red and u can find it when the light is bad or in a storm not camoflaged like a green one. same with my bright orange jacket u can see me from a helicopter i like that
OP Richard Smith 08 Dec 2005
In reply to Ben C: Yes it's nice to be seen from a helicopter, especially if you are in trouble. I remeber one of the rescue helicopters coming to have a look at me and the Old Man while we were climbing the east side of Trifan, they past slowly and the winch man waved at us; very nice of him, would not have done that if we had green on.

In reply to Richard Smith: I think force ten tents were made orange to produce a more romantic interior light.

In reply to decs: Bless.
toadwork 08 Dec 2005
In reply to Richard Smith: didn't the national trust used to give a discount if you had green tent? but as I remember it ran into problems cos they couldn't settle on the "right" shade of green
OP Richard Smith 09 Dec 2005
In reply to toadwork: Don't know, pass on that one.
