Why is it that when track and field went from the mile to the metric mile the distance became 1500 metres and not 1600? The latter is almost bang on the old mile in yards and could be run from the same start finish line. I always feel gipped when I turn in a 3.30 1500 metres and then remember that I didn't run that far after all! And his breath came in short pants. puff puff. pl.

I though that 1500M was just that - the 'mile' is still run and iirc is 4 laps - 1600M

In reply to paul lake: I too have pondered on exactly this question, but I guess that's not much help, at least your not alone.

In reply to paul lake: PS. What's your breath doing wearing short pants, let alone doing that in them.

In reply to Not Fozzz: I googled metric mile and found a whole bunch of 'miles'. The metric mile is 1500 metres, used in internatonal competition in track and field. But nothing says why 1500 metres and not 1600 metres was used as the metric equvalent. The latter is only 30 feet short of 5280. Seems that only the U.K. and U.S. run the regular mile any more. Still wondering. pl.

In reply to karl walton: If I ran any sort of mile my breath would come in short pants. As in dekcuf. pant pant. pl.
