For instance: "8 of 34" next to the title in the thread list of a thread which I've never even opened. "34" is obviously the number of posts, but what's the "8"?

8 new posts on that thread since your last visit to the forum, I think.

Surely it is the name of the Borg assigned to moderating the thread?

Can't be that - many older threads which I have read through have "x of x", ie both numbers the same, which would mean that all posts are new. And if I log out for 5 min, on returning threads which have no new posts are e.g. 9 of 37.

I expect one of the UKC team will be along to explain soon, but I think the first number is the number of posts that show below the message "not showing x older posts".  The original post is always shown so the actual number of posts shown is the first number plus 1.

Though that would still leave a question mark about how the forum decides which older posts to hide. I turned off the hiding feature because I found it frustratingly random.

But how do I get "4 of 4" for a thread without a "not showing ... " notice, which I've looked at on each of the past three days?

Edit: or "8 of 13" for a thread showing all 13 posts? 

I think I remember this being discussed some years ago and a representative of UKC came on to say that they didn’t know either 😀

Maybe they just mean "9 of 9 are not worth reading"!
