Despereately trying to find somewhere to live in London at the moment as I have to move by Jan. I have been contacted by someone with rooms available in Plumstead. Good price and house looks ok from photos but I don't know SE London at all and it is a long way from the centre (35min by train - getting the train to Greenwich a few weeks ago from London Bridge was horrible).

Has anyone ever been or even heard of Plumstead?

Plumstead is where the band Shampoo come from!

And the infamous Jim Sidetail/Rattail

You need to know no more...

Was born there but never lived there.

not been through there in a few years, but did used to work there a fair bit.

Large Asian community, some great places to eat. Traffic could be hellish.

Hopefully somebody else will be able to provide some more helpful info!

the train journey's a pain in the parts....bu tto b ehonest 35 mins isn't the worst commute i've heard of.

can't remember what the shops & streets are like...but if the price is good, it'll do to start with?..
I'd say it was a bit rough, but you can say that about anywhere - there's a few people on 'ere from that neck o' the woods

In reply to BigBrother: Whereabouts? It doesn't look hideous up by the common. I would think that you could do a lot worse

In reply to woolsack: Between plumstead station and the park.

Thanks for the replies.
In reply to BigBrother:

Assuming you have a vague interest in climbing (not apparent from your postings) I can think of few places worse to live in the UK.

It's alright in a mediocre SE London sort of way.

In reply to BigBrother: Random Plumstead facts/anecdotes

Plumstead is dreary.. Woolwich is rough.. racial abuse and gang rapes. Commuting through London Bridge is enough to drain the soul from Steven Segal. But we do know a gay bloke who lives around there and he has never had any jip about being camp as knickers. My gf's nan has never been mugged in 20 years. I worked there for a few months and it was chav central.

Poor transport. Bad vibes.

In reply to BigBrother: Thanks for the replies. I have been living in north west london for several years but have to move and struggling to find anywhere I can afford near here. But after being in easy cycling distance of the centre and living in quite a pleasent place (for London) the idea of being stuck at the end of a trainline in south east isn't really appealing.

I had heard really bad things about woolwich. Pity, as there are some great cheap flats there when I was looking for flats with a friend.
